Hi all
Last week I did 1kg of Bolivia Green Mountain Estate and 1kg of Mountain Top Estate, Ray's Selection. Both are from August 2011. A few years ago I didn't like Rays selection as it tasted grassy no matter what roast depth I did. now its fine, has a nice body and smoothness. Perhaps it just needed some more aging.

All I can say about these beans, is WOW!Originally posted by Dimal View PostHave been hanging out to roast a batch of the Ethiopian Biftu Gesha Sundried that Andy recently acquired....

What a terrific find Andy. Everything you described to a tee and talk about a huge berry aroma (blueberry for me). An absolute beauty...

Did a mix of some Guatemalan on p3 (300g on 1lb setting), dropping power to 25% on first crack. Looked pretty good .
Also did some Yirgacheffe gr3 on p3 for filter, stopping about 30s after end of first crack. First time I have tried to roast for filter - it was a little uneven coming out of the roaster, will be interested to try it in a few days.

750g Ethiopian Biftu with a faster ramp and dropped just before 2C, and 350g Yirgacheffe for filter (off camping this week with the aeropress!) dropped at 213°. Tried straight out of the roaster, and already tasting great!

Just popped on a monsooned Malabar aa ... 300g on p4c on the Behmor. Haven't really used this roast profile much, but it took a lot of energy into first crack, which then rolled straight into second crack. The beans have come out a lot darker than I am used to seeing, quit oily. Hit cooling at a rolling second crack with 4 min still on the clock. Definitely an outdoor roasting bean - heaps of smoke.
Moisture loss was 16.2%

Time for some Yemen...
Well, in a blend with some very nice Indonesian beans.
Took this quite slowly into the first few snaps of 2nd-Crack, just as copious volumes of blue smoke started to discharge from the Corretto. Quickly dumped and cooled and tasted a few brown beans - Yum...
Copy of profile below with the usual photos included. The 'wonky' trace after 1st-Crack is purely down to my lousy hand control of the heatgun. Should still be alright I hope.
Green Weight... 650g
Roasted Weight... 550g
Moisture Loss... 15.38%

Ethiopian Ghimbi - Indonesian Sulawesi Torajah
Another roast today, for our son who has recently completed a several week tour....
Decided that an Ethiopian/Indo blend would be the go, so got hurriedly organised to get this one done.
Basically, a similar profile to the Yemen/Indo blend above and once again pulled and cooled just as the blue smoke and a couple of 2nd-Crack snaps could be heard. Should be a good'n...
Profile attached but no photos this time I'm sorry - Forgot the camera when setting up...
Ethiopia Ghimbi... 400g
Indonesia Sulawesi Torajah... 250g
Roasted Weight... 550g
Moisture loss... 15.38%

Going the "Baggins Blend" this time … ie all the bits left behind in various Bag Ends!
So this one from memory has some Eth Sidamo, Thai Chiang Mai and Indo Blu Batak, 750g all roasted together with a faster ramp to just before 2C…
Just tried as an aeropress (though not really roasted with filter in mind) and had some nice vanilla and red fruit aromatics - looking forward to the espressos when the last of the Biftu works through the grinder … ahhhhh the Biftu! Amazing bean…
Happy roastings

G'day Matt...Originally posted by DesigningByCoffee View PostWas that a 50/50 ratio Mal? Got some Yemen here - and wondering if I'm game enough to blend!
Same ratio as for the Ghimbi blend above mate. Seems to work really well for these varieties...
I can really vouch for the Yemen/Sulawesi blend, an absolute ripper.
Will ask my son what he thinks of the Ghimbi blend in a few days time.

Nice. I'll give it a shot - Yemen with some Indo … don't know if I've got any Sulawesi Blue left, but the Blue Batak is fairly similar from what I've tasted, so might try that…Originally posted by Dimal View PostG'day Matt...

The Yemen/BB was great - huge choc bomb
Big roasting day after the great Millthorpe Anzac march… 3 back to back 750g batches. Two blends (Yunan/PNG Org/TanzMac and a PNG Org/Gambella) and a Brasil Yellow Bourbon. Then blended the Mocha Java-ish and Brasil for a smooth chocolate espresso surprise!
Have a great weekend!
Cheers Matt
