Moorville Ive had my Black n Decker popper for a while now and is gong strong after 40 roasts. Its important that whatever popper u get u need t let it cool fully between roasts.
Good advice mmm, I did 5 roasts on the hop with my B&D early days and killed it which was a blessing as it got me into the wonderful world of Corretto!! ;D ;D

I finally bit the bullet and purchased a Breville Crazy Popper 4 weeks ago and havent looked back. I have had some pretty successful roasts, however I just couldnt keep up to the demand of beans we needed. So, last week my new Gene Cafe arrived and Im cranking out 250+gms at a time. Now all I need is a bit of refinement and practice. Thanks for getting me hooked!! ;D

This is a post script to this thread I starded in August 2009.

In September I lashed out and purchased a Gene Cafe and was that was the start of bigger things to come...

This week I actually ordered my 5kg Has Garanti, so things have progressed since the BBQ and the popper!

Watch out... those little green beans are addictive!

Thats how I started, throw 80gms of green an in and give it a spin. You may need to construct an extention chimney, but that can be made from an old soup can. The beans will try and jump out as they roast and enlarge. Good luck!

I say skip the popper and get a Corretto setup.

Sorry, dont agree with that philosophy....

You can learn an awful lot from Popper Roasting and if things wrong every now and again during the learning phase, then youre only risking ~100g batches. With a Corretto, KKTO, Behmor, etc the batches can be anything from 500g and up. The other advantage the popper has over larger batch roasters for home use, is that sometimes you may want to roast quite small batches for blending purposes, e.g. Some of our great CS Robusta that Andy manages to acquire from time to time.

Also, roasting with a popper is a heap of fun while being a great learning tool for the uninitiated.... 8-)

                  Mal.

                    Agreed.

Whilst I did not go the usual path of upgrading machines and grinders and am pleased about that, I think that learning about roasting by starting with a popper is a good idea.

You can then progress to larger batches with a bowl and heatgun and learn some more etc etc.

I think the popper is a very important step in learning, even if its only for a month or so.

The best thing i learned very quickly on the popper was the cracks, its just so easy to hear the difference between 1st and Second crack, and if you wait long enough, you cant really avoid getting to second crack as the only control you have as a novice is the on/off button, and the only gauge you have is sight smell and sound, with a bowl and heatgun setup, you may not be apply enough heat or get hesitant and second crack may never come as was suspected in another thread recently. The corretto is GREAT innovation but it is definitely the next step up

                      Cheers
