Re: My Roast from the Popper

Imagine explaining to Medical how you got those burns!!!

"Well, it was like this, I was modifying a popcorn popper for my bean roasting when, all of a sudden, it went poof and lots of sparks came out. The worst part was, I wasted 150g of Wahgi AA. Uh, no thanks, just slap some burn cream on, my stocks are running short, so Ive got to run home and arc up the breadmaker and heat gun..."

    ;D ;D ;D

Hmmm, just bought to mind, I wonder how an hexie tab and stove would go with roasting when youre out in the middle of nowhere... [smiley=evil.gif]

Ah, KK - you are a man to be admired - probably the best use Ive seen a Fosters can put to!

Okay, Brisbane Meet Up is going to be a whole weekend in early February at Fraser Island - a variety of manual bean roasting methods on display, but someone will have to bring a generator or two so that we can run the grinders and machines!

Is he an electrician or electronics expert?
If not, I think you might find its not that simple.
Yeah he is and I realise there is more involved than how I said it. Fact is Im not the expert and I leave all those details to him, but needless to say hes saved a few of my electrical goods from the dump by modifying various things.

Mind you I didnt really explain to him in detail what I wanted to do, but I know hed come up with something if I gave him the chance although I think the same about the dimmer and lights situation.

Dont give me ideas now! I guess its good I dont do that field stuff any more - mind you if I ever do find myself out there I may just back some green beans and a hand grinder

There are a bunch of articles on the net on modding a popcorn popper to roast, you buddy can research a little if he needs help, or ask here.

Two things you might mention to him. Popper has to power two things, the fan and the heater. You probably want the fan running full all the time, while being able to adjust the heater, which means seperating the circuit. And, sometimes they use the heater to drop the voltage to the fan, so seperating them takes a little thought. Depends on the fan used, and how they are powering the fan in your popper.

Other thing is to make sure the "dimmer" is rated for enough power, whatever the wattage is for you popper. He probably already knows this, but does not hurt to mention. I have seen guys claim to use dimmers successfully for this, just make sure it is rated right.

There is a detailed project here for an over the top mod to a popper
            http://www.home-barista.com/home-roa...ts-t11841.html

I use a popper, and the advantage is that you can do smaller batches.
