Is he an electrician or electronics expert?
If not, I think you might find its not that simple.
Yeah he is and I realise there is more involved than how I said it. Fact is Im not the expert and I leave all those details to him, but needless to say hes saved a few of my electrical goods from the dump by modifying various things.

Mind you I didnt really explain to him in detail what I wanted to do, but I know hed come up with something if I gave him the chance although I think the same about the dimmer and lights situation.

Hmmm, just bought to mind, I wonder how an hexie tab and stove would go with roasting when youre out in the middle of nowhere...  [smiley=evil.gif]
Dont give me ideas now! I guess its good I dont do that field stuff any more - mind you if I ever do find myself out there I may just back some green beans and a hand grinder

There are a bunch of articles on the net on modding a popcorn popper to roast, you buddy can research a little if he needs help, or ask here.

Two things you might mention to him. Popper has to power two things, the fan and the heater. You probably want the fan running full all the time, while being able to adjust the heater, which means seperating the circuit. And, sometimes they use the heater to drop the voltage to the fan, so seperating them takes a little thought. Depends on the fan used, and how they are powering the fan in your popper.

Other thing is to make sure the "dimmer" is rated for enough power, whatever the wattage is for you popper. He probably already knows this, but does not hurt to mention. I have seen guys claim to use dimmers successfully for this, just make sure it is rated right.

There is a detailed project here for an over the top mod to a popper
    http://www.home-barista.com/home-roa...ts-t11841.html

I use a popper, and the advantage is that you can do smaller batches.

Ah, KK - you are a man to be admired - probably the best use Ive seen a Fosters can put to!

Okay, Brisbane Meet Up is going to be a whole weekend in early February at Fraser Island - a variety of manual bean roasting methods on display, but someone will have to bring a generator or two so that we can run the grinders and machines!

Imagine explaining to Medical how you got those burns!!!

"Well, it was like this, I was modifying a popcorn popper for my bean roasting when, all of a sudden, it went poof and lots of sparks came out. The worst part was, I wasted 150g of Wahgi AA. Uh, no thanks, just slap some burn cream on, my stocks are running short, so Ive got to run home and arc up the breadmaker and heat gun..."

    ;D ;D ;D

A mate actually reckons a dimmer switch would be ideal to use to lengthen the roast times if I wanted to continue with the popper.

TG is 100% correct... A dimmer is not a device to control anything - other than lights..

Id like to lengthen the roast time, as a lot of things get better with a longer roast time to bring out the flavours so I am actually looking into the corretto method. Getting the breadmaker next weekend!

The coffee is coming out good but I dare say not the best to what it could be, but mind you I have a machine Im still learning, a whole craft Im still learning and that gives me lots of room for improvement, and the only way is to practice practice practice!!

    Randy where are you situated?

The 100 foot cord voltage drop thing does not seem to happen in Australia.
If it does at all, I believe it may in the US.
I am in the US, and the people who have tried it are also probably in the US. I have not tried it, only saw stories on the net about it, but I can see how it could work, with enough wire you will get some voltage drop.

For Aussies, since it is 220V, there is less current for the same wattage, which would mean less drop (V=iR), so about 1/2 of the drop, so only 1/2 as effective as it would be here.

Re: My Roast from the Popper

Australian standards state that the drop in voltage shall not exceed 5% of supply voltage. It depends on the current to be carried in amps and the length of the route of the cable. It is true that the longer the cable, the greater the voltage drop will be. To overcome voltage drop over long distances larger diameter cables are used. As the load is quite small the drop in voltage will not be great, unless you use 100m+ long extension leads. Even so I doubt you will experience the effect described in the US.

I drink quite a bit of decaf.  For some time I timed it to 4:20 in my popper, and then moved it up to 4:40.  Much longer than this it would taste burnt - I dont know whether this is affected by the type of popper.  I would wait two days before drinking it - I found it would taste pretty awful before this, and it also didnt last that long either - after 5 or 6 days it would be in steep decline.  In the middle, though, it was very smooth, and I found it easier to roast than normal beans.
I can extend my roasting time because I have my popper set up where I can adjust the heat with a variac.  If you cant adjust the heat then extending the time will just make them darker, and eventually burn the beans.

BTW, I have seen where people use a 100 foot extention cord to connect their poppers, to extend the roasting time.  A 100 foot cord will lower the voltage at the popper, which will lower its heat output, resulting in a longer roast.
Too short of a roasts will make the coffee brighter.

And the nice thing about decaf is no chaff. I have seen other people complain its hard to roast decaf, but I have not found that to be true. And decaf does have a small window where it tastes good, so home roasters have a big advantage when it comes to decaf.

if youre able to roast outdoors that will draw out your roast times a bit, even get a desk fan flat out to get some airflow over the popper

I currently roast in the kitchen with a fan blowing some of the chaff out the window and keeping the popper cool, I can get out to 8 mins SC without any mods
