  • First Corretto Roast

    Well gradually I have been building up to doing my first corretto roast.

    $15 Tiffany BM from crime converters a week ago.

    Selection of different Green beans from bean bay arrived on Friday

    $40 ozito heat gun today

    hadnt got the stand, fans or temperature logger yet and was going to wait, but....

    I just could`nt. Stood outside holding the HG over the BM. Didnt really hear FC (hard to Know if its the equipment making weird noises, but i will get use to it in time maybe?).

    SC came about 17 minutes in I think, (is this normal, I was roasting Brazil Original Bourbon)

    Around 19 minutes in they looked ok to me, so i stopped and cooled them down, swapping them from cold pan to cold pan.

    The wind was getting rid of the chaff quite well and i am pleased how they look and smell, but as a newbie who has only had shop bought, may be not the highest standard yet.

    Tried them straight away (as i couldnt wait) and again they taste good to me (newbie).

    any tips on where to go from here (i.e whats more essential?)

    I roasted 300g of green to 250g of roasted.

    another question, i pointed the hg to one corner of the bowl inside, is this normal practice and there any blueprints or designs available with specifics?

            Sen - you are on track to some great coffee...well done.

            I think the min sustainable rate of climb (c per min) is dependant on the container shape an size, batch size and heat gun. I have a large drum size, large batch size typically to be controllable, and a powerful heat gun (Makita). The problem I have is that I cannot usually get the sustainable safe climb rate to the depths that Mal does with his - I can get 3-4 degrees per min with my set up as the safe min climb rate between FC and SC but any lower and I risk going into stall of negative territory which worries me. I have tried lowering the actual gun temp, moving the gun away, combo of both but 3-4 is it. That limits me a little in respect of FC to SC but I manage to stretch it long enough to get a nice smooth brew.

            I set a mate up recently with a smaller BM and a Bosch electronic HG and his is much easier to control at the lower climb rate. I wonder too if my house is getting the full 240 volts based on a previous wall reading.

                  I have noticed some designs use a board to cover the roast, with a hole for the HG. what is the benefit of this over a stand for the HG. what will give better results?

                    The board covering the roast affects the temp, keeps the heat in longer, handy if you live in a cold climate, or you have a less powerful HG, i live in brissie, so not an option for me, i have heard it helps with temp stability too!

                      Covering the BM definitely helps with controlling temp and as a result a consistent roast through the batch.
                      You can also run the HG at a lower temperature by using this method.
                      You will still need to allow for chaff to escape the bread pan.
                      I dont cover fully but leave a section for the HG to sit and the chaff to blow out.
