  • Green Bean Blend (not advised)

Well I am sure I have not been the first or the last to do this (I hope so anyway)  I had just finished roasting my Espresso blend (in my toper 5kg) so I had about 4kg in the cooling tray spinning round.  I had place the next batch of 2.5kg of a mocha Java blend in the hopper ready to go.  When the temp hit its mark and ready to drop the beans I pulled the lever. the beans fall into the roaster and straight out into the cooling tray.  I had left the front gate open of the roaster so I have now the Nescrape version of Green Bean blend.  A whole 6.5kg of coffee green beans mixed with Brown beans.

Did I sort them,  Of course.  1 green bean, 1 Brown bean, 2 green Beans, 2 Brown browns............ 52468 green beans, 52468 Brown beans.  It took be a good part of about 2-3 hours to sort.  Luck I wasnt roasting on a 120kg Toper.  Next roast I made sure the gate was closed.  ;D I can laugh now, but it wasnt funny at the time.  Ok now its other roasters turn to tell us that I wasnnt the only silly bugger to do this.  please please please

Mods feel free to move this to the "Stupid things we have done" Topic area ;D

Maybe this is how the Nescrape came up with their Greenbean blend. Some kid doing work experience pulled the hatch of the roaster and let 240kg of green mix with browns and they thought oh well our coffee is already bad, this could make it taste better. ;D ;D ;D

Yeah Steve, Ive done the same thing but havent sorted the beans. Ive also started charging the drum instead of discharging.

And more than once Ive been so intent on listening through the trier that Ive scalded the top of my head on one of the hot parts....ouchy! ;D

Great thought Javea "never admits to errors" phile..

As the Brown ones should be lighter, with a tweak or two one would expect that you could separate the mix to some extent..

PS. Did it to a smaller extent on a HT :-)

Cooling and as it was winter decided to add a few greens for an extended pre heat... OOPS... The dump shoot stays open for a while ;D

However it was only a few and I quickly tilted the HT up and they did not all come out... Power off ... Fix up and make sure no one saw...

I have been trying to see if I could get one or two beans to grow, and whilst soaking them to see if they are alive, the water looks very dark and husky floating looking, I have been sitting there going do I try it or dont. I assume its similar to the decaffeinating of beans, but cold processed.
