Onya, Hazchem. But as a special favour for a fellow CSer, I could pick up your Herbie for you (from cuppacoffee I presume) then do a series of quality control roasts to ensure they survived the trip north. Nothing to do with the fact that I missed out on the Herbazu, of course

I have got 5 kg of the Sumatra Panjang Mandheling

How can one resist this from Andys description

Translucent blue/green in colour with a golden layer of chaff this wet hulled Mandheling produces huge body and liquid chocolate type pours ooze from the group handle. Deep, rich and earthy without the funk sometimes associated to some Sumartran coffees. Great as a single origin at CS9-10 roast depth or add a higher acidity bean to make an excellent espresso blend.

Yes, this was the bean I thought Andy considered to be better than the Herbazu, based on that description

Re: CS Bean Club - October 09

Well, I just wok roasted 400g of the Herbie.

Initial thoughts - a LOT of chaff - blew the chaff out of the wok a couple of times mid roast so I could see what I was doing, and then much, much more again when I was cooling in the sieves. It seemed to be a slower roaster than most of my other beans, taking a long time to get to FC and then fairly quick into SC.

Beautiful even roast for wok roasting, and threw out about 3 beans for being below par but went from 400g to 320g by the end, so about 75g of chaff. Phew!

Now just have to rest and wait to drink - damnit, I wish there was some way to speed this part of the process up, but most/all beans taste very earthy under the 3 day mark to me, so I just have to be patient...

            Cheers
            Di

                Gday roasters,

I picked up my Kuza yesterday and put a roast through the Gene Café just now. Beautiful looking green beans.

                300 gm.
                Set temperature 230°C.
1st crack at 11.8 min. Reduce setting to 225°.
At 13.8 min. reduce setting to 220°.
2nd crack (first snaps) at 16.6 min.
Cool at 17 min. (not at rolling 2nd crack yet)
                Colour--CS 9-10, not super even.
Easy to roast, very loud cracks, little chaff.
Ill report on taste in a few days (or however long I can last!)

Re: CS Bean Club October 09: Costa Rica Cafetalera Herbazu +Ethiopia Kuza

                  Wow wow wow

                  Costa Rica Cafetalera Herbazu:
                  Batch size: 540g
                  FC: 11:21 @ 199
                  RFC: 12:50 @ 206
                  EFC: 14:10 @ 209

Deliberately didnt hit SC and cut the roast at 16:00 @ 216
                  CS 8-9

Cup - just incredible! And this was a taste 5 mins post roast! Cant wait to see how it develops. Honey sweetness with a citrus punch and a hint of lemon.
I had a friend roast this to about CS 7 - huge citrus bomb! Combo of grapefruit and orange. Awesome.

I honestly feel sorry for anyone who missed out on this!

                  Cheers,
                  Ben

                    Excellent - thanks guys.

Ben - do you mind adding to your post that it was is the Herbazu you roasted. We can tell now that it is (not just by the fact you had to put the slipper in at the end ) but later on some might wonder.

Ben. What brew method did you use? And do you want to share your excess stock? 8-)

Smokey - this roast was for espresso. I can imagine this would be very very exciting using manual brewing methods, and I plan do a lighter roast at some point to try this in plunger (the extent of my manual brewing technology).

In terms of excess stock, I am willing to sell some of my stock at $5 per bean. Enquire within

Um...let me check. Yep - you certainly did - and incredible too.

Looking forward to hearing more about it. Perhaps even try it some time

I got up the morning and the Kuza was saying "Drink me" even though its only a day old.

I put 21 gm in the grinder, pulled a 25 ml ristretto, steamed milk and poured out a piccolo latté in my Illy nude cup (65 ml).

Lovely, strong coffee flavour with a hint of sweet orange. Not spicy, no "wild" flavours like a Sidamo, but smooth and very satisfying. It reminds me of a well-balanced Yemen/Sumatra blend.
