Re: CS Bean Club November 09 - Colombia Volcan Galeras Supremo + Guatemala Huehetenango
Nope - I was considering providing last rites for the BeanClub. Participation was dwindling despite having two beans in the previous month.
Last month there was also two. I have neither... well I have last seasons HueHuetenango. I roasted some but sold it to a workmate before I tried it.

Re: CS Bean Club November 09 - Colombia Volcan Galeras Supremo + Guatemala Huehetenango
Wow, has no one posted on the beans of the month?
I had skipped this one as, just as my Columbian was ready to open, I was struck with the flu for a couple of weeks and had no taste so could hardly put in any notes at the time. I had come back to have a look what others had said and cannot find anything. Now that my tastes are back I was thinking of roasting some more Columbian to add to the notes here, but not so sure now???

Re: CS Bean Club November 09 - Colombia Volcan Galeras Supremo + Guatemala Huehetenango
Well after now having one of the longest thread names on CS, lets get started.
Beans are being delivered (except for those who already have theirs, of course)
You might also want to check this thread for some tips on roasting the HueHue.
Do a full search of CS for huehuetenango and you will find more, but the Bean Club is also about trying new things.
I also found these notes from remnants of the CS Wiki still floating about. Damn, these almost make me want to hit BeanBay and stock up :-/
20070414 Colombian Volcan Galeras Supremo Bold
This is a favourite base for many CSrs due to the medium/heavy body and the caramel tones in the cup. It is also an easy roasting bean due to its large size and great grading.
This Colombian Volcan Galeras have been hand sorted and graded as Supremo Bold and are one of the largest beans are produced in Colombia. It produces a medium/heavy bodied coffee with great grind aroma and a slight caramel sweetness in the aftertaste.
20080602 Guatemala Huehuetenango SHB
This is the Guatemalan Huehuetenango, popular in the green bean offerings for its rich and floral aroma with a great body
20081118 Guatemala Huehuetenango
The high altitude at origin produces this Strictly Hard Bean (SHB). In the espresso cup at a CS8 you find a mid bodied rounded balance of sweet fruit flavours and enough acid to give a sharp finish or you can roast it to CS9 to mellow the citric bite. Great coffee and easy to roast.
0080602 Ethiopian Harar Longberry Organic-FT
This Ethiopian Harar Longberry is certified organic by the Fairtrade Oromia Co-op. They are dry processed and produce a stunning mid bodied, rich, earthy espresso. Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia, is the origin of all coffees of the world. Longberry indicates the finest sorted Ethiopian coffee beans and one of the best African coffees available. It displays a sharp winy acidity as its dominant characteristic, followed by a rich aroma and thick almost tangy flavor. This is a very bold, intense, edgy coffee. Truly one of the worlds great coffees. It adapts to a variety of roast profiles. Recommended Roast Profile: Full City + for added bitter-sweetness, Lighter for more brightness.
I also recommend having a stroll through Knockbox for info on ghosts of BeanBays past, and learn a bit too such as this:

Youve gotta try the HueHue at least.
You know your a CS when .... it takes 3 digits to write down your green bean stash ;D

Poll is now closed and the winnders are:

As the Eth. Harrar Longberry was only beaten by a nose, Im happy to see it discussed here as well.
I have only tried roasting the Hue in a popper earlier this year so looking forward to giving it a go in the corretto.
BTW, SHB stands for strictly hard bean for thjose who dont already know. This means it should be an relatively easy roaster.
Anyone know of a good resource, preferably online, which lists the hardness/softness of beans? From what Ive discovered, the high altitude beans tend to be hard and the low altitude beans soft. I wonder how hardness is measured?

Re: CS Bean Club - November 09
I didnt realise the bean club idea was so confusing. We are not voting on what we think the best bean is...we are voting on the one we wish to use as our bean of the month to all have a go at roasting and tasting and then sharing our notes on.
It is like a book club. You do not read every book in the shop and vote for the one you liked most...you decide on a book for everyone to read that month/week and then get together and discuss the book.
I went Columbian this month as I already have some and really dont need more green beans at the moment.

I think you were a lot more "on track" than I was.Originally posted by 747C646E73170 link=1257716438/17#17 date=1258015828I thought it was more about comparing roast method/level, rest time and end result being good/not so good...

Re: CS Bean Club - November 09
Thanks for that explanation flynn
I guess I thought that the poll was a quick way to see the best bean of the month as voted for by some CSrs and couldnt see how this was possible before tasting

Re: CS Bean Club - November 09
Perhaps, but some unknowns also get voted on - e.g. the Aceh.Originally posted by 223930262528510 link=1257716438/12#12 date=1257997907the beans with the best reputations would be the ones with the most votes
Theres also a section on CS for such requests http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?board=WishlistOriginally posted by 223930262528510 link=1257716438/14#14 date=1258000472Andy might just get some more of a popular bean from the same crop
I would hope less popular beans get voted and become a crowd favourite. The Peru Ceja has also become a bean with a good reputation but it hasnt made it as one of the Beans of the Month
Anyway, if i left the vote to the end of the month, I think you would find the usual suspects would still get voted.
The only way around this would be to only have the relatively unknown beans in the poll but I think this would restrict participation. But it isnt just about reconfirming a beans reputation; someone might report on a different roasting profile that improved the bean (or not).
Its not the CS Best Bean of the Month Club and, as I have said before, its not the CS Poll Voting club. I just made the initial selection process democratic.

Re: CS Bean Club - November 09
If I knew where the grapes came from it would increase my chances of getting something similar rather than not knowing at all.Originally posted by 74555E5E5943300 link=1257716438/13#13 date=1257998710If you buy a bunch of grapes from the supermarket and like them, it doesnt mean youll enjoy the next crop.
Wines from certain areas seem to suit different people as well, surely that is a similar situation.
And you never know, Andy might just get some more of a popular bean from the same crop. [smiley=wink.gif]
