Re: New to Roasting
Insert shameless plug here: You can always fashion yourself a popperdom.
Original thread is here: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1125061629/0
I would suggest using metal flyscreen, you can cut it to the size and shape you want.

The chaff does fly up but if you use a fan for airflow it will blow it away anyway.

One more thing, if you add the chimney, does the chaff fly straight up? How do you direct it?

Gday Darcy,
Welcome to our wonderfully obsessive coffee community [smiley=thumbsup.gif] ;D
Theres lots of info to be found around the forum on popper roasting and I would advise using the site "Search" function to locate these. All the best and happy searching,
Mal.

Hi Darcy, Welcome! I have the crazy popper as well and you can roast up to 150 grams in this with a chimney. Remove the dome altogether and than the can/exhaust tip can fit into place. It allows for a bigger batch size as the beans expand and also help with getting rid of the chaff. Your first batch you are best to let it go through the whole cycle of roasting so you can an understanding of what the cycles all are. To the point of being black and undrinkable is a good idea as a test. You will get to recognise the different cracks. Different beans do behave differently though. When you roast <100 grams you will need to help the beans stir at the start with a wooden spoon or a chopstick or similar.
100 grams is a realsitic batch for a crazy popper. There is a thread in the roasting section on the crazy popper that will have plenty of tips on these though. http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1155880692
Enjoy your new found roasting hobby, it may be a bit of a hassle now but is worth it.

New to Roasting
Hope someone out there can help..
I have had my Rancilio S24 and Rocky for about three years, and after visiting your site realised my next step was roasting my own beans. I didnt want to jump in and buy a dedicated roaster so have opted to start with the Breville Crazy Popper.
Once my green beans arrived I was eager to give this a go. Got the starter pack from this site. Great idea.
Some people have said they roast any where from 120 to 250 grams. The cup only takes around 70 grams, so thats where I started. The roast took 5 mins. i think I pulled the pin before the second crack. The beans are fairly even, but like i said only managed to roast 70grams.
I left the plastic dome top on is this correct. Some have mentioned fitting exhausts. Does this just sit on the top. What is the benefit.
I can see the roasting getting serious. looking foward to tommorow morning to sample the roast.
Any tips and tricks would be much appreciated.Tags: None
