wow thanks everyone, Im gonna read all that a couple of times cuz theres some  really good points from everyone there.
I should really learn to fix the fan bearings and stuff regardless I suppose. Still, Ill probably try and use something else to roast now, just in case!
If it works for you and you like what in teh cup... Why change ?

A little research on ya stove and you may fine teh fan is a simple IN / Out for the service guy..

    If not.....

KKTO / Behmor Coffee Roaster / Popper / Fry pan and spoon / HT

I was being anal.. Sealed aint sealed and some just use plain sealed bearings that are not suited for high or prolonged temps.
Most if not all replacement fan motors available now are made in China, the (SEALED) bearings they use aint worth two bob, your right, they are not sealed.
Your right they can be serviced, but in a commercial situation much quicker and cheaper to do a change over, time is money.

Sorry... Ya making an old many feel crappy..

    I just hit  here  http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1274531936/0#12

And then I see your reply...   Thank gawd for the icon at the end..

In the medical and defence contracts etc.. There are good reasons for some points; as to what one can replace with what..  Yea; it does not always work out...  But have seen many systems; where from new worked well and after a service..... Failures went through the roof or the so called OEM part failed or did not work as expected.

I guess I am saying... Nothing is always as simple as one might first assume.. Case by case.  Problem is many just grab the bull by the horns and do not bother to even think..

I mean just ask GJ and or many other.. Coffee.. So simple, what is there to be concerned about.. Just add HOT water and FOAMY milk  = $$$$

Would yas agree that the coffee roasting is responsible?
    Morning Rolley,
Like Hot shod Im inclined to think the fans time had come, I cant see anything in the process that would cause the sealed bearings to fail.
I used to run 4 large walk in ovens with 2 fans in each (drying minerals) @ a modest 70C for 12 hours a day, we were constantly replacing fan motors that the bearings had seized on, used to buy boxes of 6 at a time so that we always had backups.
Any heating will cause issues for dry and or lubed bearings..

It is all about risk and costs..  Lab incubators ie. CO2 in particular were always a pain for bearings..

Hair drier.. Usually teh cord before teh bearings..

Lots of roasting where OILS are released will cause issues and also things seizing after the cool down and dry out..  Thus at next start up the motor over loads and causes a burn out.. Just plain logic.

Some fans can be accessed easily and for some; an additional insurance will cover you.. Be careful of teh wording..

Coffee produces some interesting oils.. When it drys hard it is worse than tar..  Enough in teh motor bearings and they would be so sticky / tight that the motor in the simple home / domestic oven would crap its self..

    Trick is to;

    1: Not use teh oven

2: Use an understand what ya doing and teh work load

3: Service ya fan - YES it can be done... I do it

4: Some fan types and or positioning etc will make it worse due to air flow or no filtration.

    All about costs and risk..

Even teh KKTO and HT and others are open to seized bearings etc due to chaff and coffee oils..

If it has a bearing... And stuff can get to it... It can fail.. KISS

    Hi Rolley,

I have to disagree , fans in oven fail ...... my parents went thru 2 in about 4 years, same story, bearings.

I wouldnt roast in an oven , cause I dont have to , BUT I wouldnt be blaming your beans....

So did any other stuff ever get cooked / baked other than coffee beans ?

And if so; did it ever become infused with a coffee flavour ?

I would categorise this method as baking not roasting

started a topic A warning for anyone who roasts in the oven

A warning for anyone who roasts in the oven

    Hey hey : )

Over the last 2 years Ive made some interesting observations with my oven roasting, Ill go through it all because... it means Ill (sadly) have to give up roasting in the oven.

Okay, I use a sharp convection oven, not sure what model number or anything but its the biggest size, and they make fffffffffantastic ovens. I absolutely love it, and it does a great job with coffee too.

2 years ago, my oven started to make this horrible noise when we turned the oven on.. over a few weeks it got worse and worse until the fan that blows the heat from the elements stopped working.

Id been roasting coffee in the oven for around a year. At the time I didnt really think it was related though.

The oven was a month out of the 5 year warranty, and being absolutely hopeless with anything mechanical/electrical, I bought a new one. This time I was too tight to buy the 5 year warranty.

So, Ive had oven number 2 for a year now. FOUR DAYS before the 12 month warranty expired, the exact same thing happened - the noises, and the fan failure which renders the oven useless.

With the warranty it got fixed in a couple of hours luckily, and the electrician told me that the ball bearings and shaft were "stuffed". Thats all the details I could get out of him :-?

I think now, that its a bit obvious.... the smoke?, oils?, and possibly the chaff from roasting coffee in the oven has covered the moving parts with a grit that stopped them working properly and/or broke them. ... thats my theory anyway? It took both ovens around 12 months to fail, roasting 1-2 roasts per week.

I had a look at the exhaust vents on the back of the oven too, and they have quite a bit of dark brown grit on them.

Would yas agree that the coffee roasting is responsible?

I wonder what Ill do for a roaster now.. haha.
Working...
