  • The first batch! When can I drink it?

Heres a piccie of my first batch roasted in my nearly new Hottop-B:

    Peru Ceja de Selva Estate.

First crack 5:00min, rolling by 4:23 (temp 194)
Not sure if I hit second crack by the roast end at 20:00min

    I think about CS9.

Ambient temperature in the garage was about 15!, but the probe said the beans got to about 205.

Now sitting in a recycled bag with valve.

So....when can I grind and start drinking?  About 5 days?

Given the CS9 level can I expect it to be a little more acidic?

    Cheers

    James

In theory one can sample the coffee every day to judge on what day it suits or tingles your taste buds

That s the day it will be right for you

So whats the message KK? devote the whole day to pulling (and drinking) shots with whatever is left from the batch, I can just see it 300 grams and 16 shots later bouncing off the walls like a super ball.

Photos can be deceptive James but this roast looks quite a bit lighter than 9 to me, more like a 6 or 7.

I call it a Win - Win situation

          Roast more and Drink more

I did however say test daily ! not hourly

I would have to say yes with a roast depth of that color. Not that South American coffee are renowned for hight acidity like an African but it will certainly be a lot brighter.

If i read right, it was a 20:00 minutes roast? With a color that light i suspect it may have stalled somewhere along the line? But color can be deceiving also.

May i ask what the starting temp was when you added the greens to the Hottop? And what was the batch size in and out?
Im a Hottoper myself and i may be able to share some things i have learnt about it

I would be inclined to try it straight away. If it tastes like coffee then you should be fine a few days from now

            Luke.

First crack only after 5 mins...   That must be counting down to 20 mins yeah?

Bit of a noob question Im sure, since no one else has said anything! :-[

lol i would suspect that yes...the 5 minutes was what was remaining on the clock.

Otherwise 15 minutes from first crack till the time it was ejected seems a bit long to me :

The Hottop B timer counts down from whatever time you set it, up to 25 minutes. The default time (on mine anyway) is 18 min.

I usually try mine every couple of days up till about day 6, then its daily.

Re: The first batch! When can I drink it?

                    Thanks for the suggestions!

Sorry, first crack was 5:00 left on the timer, so 15 minutes into the roast.  250g went in, I forgot to weigh them afterwards.

Temp at the time of putting the beans in was 75 degrees.

I have a feeling the roast stalled - probably because it was only 15 degrees outside!  I followed Greg Pullmans demo roast on his website and adjusted the heat and fan accordingly, but in the last six minutes the temp on the Hottop-B only went up 6 degrees, finishing at 196 at ejection time.  I was going to extend but liked the colour of the beans.  The probe showed the bean temp went up to 205.

I went along to the roasting demo at Cosmorex today - but didnt think to bring along some roasted beans to show Attilio and Michael.  Had a great session and as a bonus got to take home a huge bag of roasted beans from the demo - so I think Ill have to try a blend!  ;D

As far as trying the roast is concerned--I usually wait at least until it is cool. :

The Guys at CosmoreX would be a trove of information for you as Atillio has been in the games for a very long time.

If your worried about times then its better to go too fast than too slow. Thats how i approach it anyway.

When i get some greens i have never tried before this is usually what i do...

Drop beans it at 75c with heat on 100% and fan on 0%
Once i see some steam rising from the bean chute i turn the fan on to 25%
Once i know that 1st crack is just about to start i reduce heat the 80%
When 1st crack begins i turn the fan onto 50% and heat down to 50%
Let it coast along to the first snap of second crack and eject.

From there i will taste and attempt to figure out what(if any) changes i need to make.

Delayed gratification, an unusual quality in this day and age.

With my new cooler (the sieve, bucket and vacuum cleaner) the beans are cool within a minute! ;D

Great stuff Greg, having a decent cooler certainly simplifies things doesnt it.
