Re: The first batch! When can I drink it?

Had the first cup on Monday afternoon, so roughly 2 days after the roast.

Nice...but not much aroma or flavour.

Second cup this morning - more flavour, more aroma as I opened the bag.

I had made the mistake of opening the bag each morning to have a sniff...so will restrain myself to using the beans every other day, alternating with the CosmoreX freebie beans.  So I should be able to see how each batch ages, given they were roasted within a couple of hours of each other on Saturday morning.

Instead of opening just give the bag a light squeeze and sniff what comes out of the one way valve, easy.

Batch number 2 and the search for second crack!

Ive been working my way through the first batch and have but a few spoonfuls left (as Ive been also trying to get through my Cosmorex bonus beans mentioned above   ) but this afternoon tried the second batch, this time using Brazilian pulped natural.

250g in, First crack at 200, both on Hottop and one the probe.

Now, still didnt reach second crack...at the probe saying around 218 the Hottop started beeping at me and shut down the fan and the heating element...back to the manual.  So I ejected... :-/

            210g after roasting.

Heres a piccie of batch number 2:

Looks lighter to me - nowhere near city roast.

Anyway, its going in a bag for a week.

The last beans of the first roast still make a cracking cup of coffee.  I wonder whether their post-roast shelf life is extended by the milder roast..?  :-?

The Cosmorex beans are starting to sprout a few little beads of oil...but they definitely reached second crack.

Your thoughts or suggestions for the next batch appreciated!

            Sniff

EDIT: As I typed this a distant bell rang in the back of my head...checking the manual, it was the auto-safety feature of the Hottop warning me about hitting 210 degrees environmental temp... :

              Batch #3: Ethiopian Gambella Sundried

Hmmm....kids in bed, wife in bed, nothing on the telly...

              time for a roast!

Into the lucky dip of my CS starter pack, out with some Gambella Sundried.

              250g in, 210 grams out.

Ambient temperature 8 degrees! Thats Canberra for you at 9.30 in the evening.

First crack 200c, still not sure if I hit second crack, possibly rolled straight on into it.

Ejected when the bean probe said 225c on the dot, although the Hottop said the ET was on about 205c.

What do you say, about a CS 9-10?

Its gone in a bag for a week, not to be touched...

Youre right - the Gambella beans did vary a lot in shade - some look lighter because theres chaff still on them.

Re: The first batch! When can I drink it?

Think the uneven roasting is common with the Gambella.

Previous roast of the Gambella was also uneven for me.

Re: The first batch! When can I drink it?

First cup of the Gambella roast was tried this morning...

Very smooth - chocolatey too. I think the extra darkness of the roast makes a difference, quite pleased with myself for getting it a nice 9-10 colour.

This roast makes me appreciate how acidic (but not unpleasant) the earlier roasts were.

I had a coffee at a local Italian restaurant last week...and was distinctly underwhelmed. I think I could taste staleness, perhaps the grinds had been sitting in the doser too long?

This is what coffeesnobs has done to me!!! ;D

Yea and after a while it rubs off. Even my wife no longer has a coffee after we eat out...   She will look at me and say "Shall we chance it ? " AND depending on where we are etc...   We may; as it is the great way to end a dinner.  However, if were are in doubt we dont bother; as bad coffee can just spoil the whole evening..

                            Tonights roast...Venezuelan San Cristobal.

Ejected just on the start of second crack, bean probe temp just hit 225.

In the bag for at least a couple of days...but the Ethiopian Gambella has nearly run out....hmmmmm  :

                              Guatemala Huehuetenango...

Slightly disrupted roast.  Beans ejected well before first crack....

So I chucked them back in and tried again.

                                India Mysore Nuggets Extra Bold.

I tried to get the enviromental temperature and beanprobe temp to cross over at a low temp, but despite keeping the heat low for the first half of the roast, they still crossed just before first crack, ie around 200c.
