just get used to adjusting your height and youll be on your way!
    Good suggestion.

I found height adjustment was quicker and easier than fiddling with HG dials.
With my previous non-variable HG it was set to full blast as height was the only way to vary the temp at the beans.

    Hi Tonee,

I think Ive got the same HG as you - $39 ish Ozito variable temp from Bunnings? If thats the case Ive gone through a lot of trial and error, and ended up with some baked, some brilliant and some burnt beans before coming to find an understanding of how to use it without a way to see the temp.

The dial on the end of the hg has 12 teardrops shaped into it - an easy way to make sense of what temp youre on is to mark it out. Get it to the lowest temp, all the way clockwise and make a mark on the dial and body at the same spot. I did mine with white out, really easy to see. I also wrote 1 there for low. Then go all the way anti-clockwise, mark that 12 on the body. then make marks on the body equal with the teardrops and you then have a dial between 1-12 from low to high to work with. With this HG dont ever use the low fan switch, its nowhere near hot enough for anything, I lost a good pile of beans one day discovering that! And I wouldnt reccomend using the highest heat, its far too hot for coffee unless youre at a good distance!

I always use the round extension nozzle that was included and my general set up is HG on HIGH fan,  HEAT #8, HEIGHT starting 10cm above the bean mass. On getting to first crack I raise the HG 2 - 2.5cm and coast to second crack. With that as a starting point I find most beans get to first crack around 12 mins and to second @ 18mins. With a Kenyan this weekend I needed more heat, so cranked the HG to #9 from the start and got the same times.

As bassway said the temps are not linear on this thing, not even close so playing with the dial is a sure fire way to either burn or bake your beans. If the markings Ive said above make sense (if they don’t, let me know and Ill send you a pic) #8 is a good solid heat, just get used to adjusting your height and youll be on your way!

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,
    Matthew

    nice roast Tonee ;D ;D ;D
I would leave the lid off while learning as visuals are important without a heat probe.
check out this link it should be helpful to you:-

If it is cold and windy here I use a brick on top of the BM so I can easily move it and look inside. I think I have the same heat gun as you too. I usually turn it to full heat and then back it off about a quarter of the way back. I dont know if that is right, it seems to work fine for me. I then watch the roast and if it is going too fast back the heat off a little or remove the brick.

Looks like youve got some good compost there!! If someone asks for a black coffee, I guess you could give them these beans......

If this is your first roasting experience I would suggest not using a cover till you have the process under your wings.
Go with what TG said and look at the colour, listen to the sounds of the cracks while roasting and take notes.

Also that osh!to heat gun temperature adjustment is not linear. At least the ones I have were not.

It maybe better to adjust the height of the gun while you are learning.

I think time and colour would have been more relevant than heat.

I used to hit mine with max temp around 5-600deg and then watch the colour and listen for first crack around about when the beans were getting darker than just a tan colour.

I never found the need to cover my BM.

    corretto help

Whoa! I really got it wrong today..somehow I missed hearing the first crack and when the second crck came(which I thought was the first) I waited for the second crack again [smiley=happy.gif]. I had some foil over the top and well, I ended up cs 10 25+ just short of a cremation :P
So until I get the usb multimeter and with no other thermometer, is there any real way of knowing how much heat to use on HG for roasting?

Working...
