Hi Gary,

Thanks for advice.
Would you please PM me how can we get that baby roaster and how much? What are the advantages over the popper?

Thanks,
C.
Thanks for helping out CharlieSNOBs 2mcm.
Judging from comments, i think the biggest difference is the taste in the cup. They are both similar in a way due to the fact they are fun to use, again based on the feedback form other CSers. Marks comments about the roaster was very useful and informative. I think it will help others down the path of the baby roaster.

Has anyone found any reviews of the baby roaster from overseas websites?
Happy roasting. Gary

Believe me, i get all the exact symptoms u,re getting, except the roasting times which mine is shorter due to my popper wattage output. A good chart to get printed is off Sweet Maria,s website. Later on, you can get one from Beanbay when you get the time, they,re great.
Saving up for a FZ-RR baby roaster...saving saving.....cant wait... . Isnt this what,s coffeesnobbery is about? Having fun and eagerly waiting for the upgrade. 8-)

Thanks TG,

I just finished my 2nd batch

Now 85g green bean (same Columbian)
Put the naked popper in the the cardboard.
11.5c ambient temp.

1st crack: 3:50 mins
Continous 1st crack: 3:55 - 5:10 mins
2nd crack: 7.50 mins I can hear quite clear 2nd pop sound
Continous 2nd crack: 8:15 - 10.00 mins before taking beans off (again I was afraid of burning beans as I STILL GOT NO SMOKE) :-[

NOTE: After 2nd POP, I got the constant 2nd continuos pop for nearly 2 mins....BUT with the popping sound, the beans also pop out the small round piece that infact creat the black spot (divots) on the bean surface.!!!!

ANyway, I have got the same bean color (no CS card to compare) as my 1st batch with total time of 10mins instead of 20mins 1st roast.

Yes, try a bigger batch next time round and keep an eye on the time. A bigger batch should increase heat in the chamber due to heat retention from restricted air movement from the slots. 5-7 minutes is normal for a popper. Mine is the opposite, didnt do any modifications and due to my Mistral popper being a Mistral 1200watt, my roasts are less than 5 minutes!! , so i had to put less beans in mine for the roast to be longer.

Any idea how to avoid the black spot on the beans?

If you mean "divots" like the ones in the linked thread, dont worry too much about them.

After reading a lots from this site and Yes I was afraid of TOO HOT popper and end up with TOO QUICK raosting, so the popper I used was naked :P I took all the plastic and cover part off. That would turn to NOT TOO HOT popper now  :-/

Will increase batch size next roast.
Any idea how to avoid the black spot on the beans?

Thanks all.

They certainly dont look burned but do have some divots out of them.
I used to get divots if I heated them too quickly.
I would guess that the beans didnt get enough heat between 1st and 2nd crack quickly enough to take that long.
I would try more beans next time, maybe 100g, that should shorten the time to 2nd crack.
Usually I would be trying to slow down the roast when I was using a popper!
Maybe the heater is faulty?

As a complete amateur myself, I can say that your beans dont look too bad. But I havent had that experience as far as the long break between cracks with a popper. My popper (breville crazy popper) does the whole thing in about 7-8 minutes maximum.

Maybe your popper is a little under powered, and youre struggling to get the extra few degrees to get that second crack, thats my guess. But that is worth everything you paid for it. Nothing.

Give the beans a crack in the grinder, and if they taste good, then youre fine. 8-)

• My First Roast (Popper) : THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG!!!

Hello,

This is my 1st roast. Bought popper a few mths already, never got a chance to roast (deciding to go corretto or popper).

Finally go popper (SB: Cornelius) as I have no fund for the heat gun!! (Only got old BM)

Given no experience never know what 1st and 2nd crack sound like.
I think there must be some problem with my roast. Here is my timing.

Ambient condition: 3.00pm  13c  Humidity 40%
Green Bean: 80g Columbia Specialty.
(I dont have thermometer yet, only timing)

1st crack: ~ 5 min

continuous 1st crack??: ~ 5.45 min - 7.40 min

2nd crack: ~ 19.30 min  ---> Seriously I thought it would has been disaster as I didnt hear 2nd pop/crack after 15mins

continuous 2nd crack?? ~20:20 min - 20:45 (coz Ive seen no smoke so I left beans pop until 20:45 and I was afraid to burn the beans so I took off)

Final Roasted bean wt ~ 65g

Second Crack and NO SMOKE!! STRANGE???

- Should I wait until getting smoke after 2nd crack?
- 20:45mins total time is too long?
- There is a black spot on a few beans, what is it?
Cant wait to try in the next 3 days.

Cheers,
Charles
