  • First Popper roast

    Hi All,
My first post. I was given a Breville 800ES , BCG450 & Crazy popper for fathers day.
I ordered the starter pack of greens from here and completed my first roast today.

I didnt take down notes ( silly , i know ) however i would just like some opinions on how this looks.

I could easily hear the 1st crack and rolling first, but due to excessive background noise i couldnt hear a second crack / crackle. i didnt want to leave my roast too long and waste beans.

The beans in this roast are Ethiopian Guna Limmu - 80gms.

I think i pulled them too early. To me they look nice and the picture doesnt really do them justice i dont think. i only had my iphone with me at the time.

1st crack started @ 2:20 and rolling by 2:50 as far as i recall. Beans pulled at around 5:00 mins.

I will be trying them out next week so hoping they taste ok.

    Cheers.

    Welcome to Coffee Snobs.
Looks to be a pretty good effort for your first roast, few of the beans a little light but could be the lighting.
Lets know how the taste test goes.

      Yeah they look OK.

Do a search for my Crazy Popper mods so you can lengthen the roast times.

        Re: First Popper roast

The problem with the popper is its quite difficult to manage the temperature. You dont want it getting too hot too quickly, but I think youve experienced the opposite where it didnt get hot enough to hit 2nd crack.

Defnitely do the chminey mod if you havent already, other than you just have to experiment with different beans / batch sizes until you get something that works for you.

Thanks for the feedback. I have done the chimney mod. Perhaps it wasnt hot Enough due to the breeze as I roasted outside. Will have to keep experimenting. It is quite fun though.

I will see how it tastes on Monday.

As an alternative to opaque chimneys, a Hurricane Lamp style Glass Chimney works very well. I found a place online that sells them in all shapes and sizes a few years back. It works great 8-)..... Lets you see the bean colour progression much more easily, naturally enough.... :

                Mal.

                  Re: First Popper roast

I also got a Breville Crazy Popper for Fathers day but not geting very good results. I have tried various qtys from 50gm to 120gm to try and vary the results. Cannot get beans to 1st crack. Added a soup tin chimney. Tried 100g gave up and threw them out after 31mins and no 1st crack. Did another 50gm batch today 17min lucky if it got to CS4. Decided to try popcorn! That worked! Wondering if my ambient temperature of between 8 and 11 Deg is making it too hard to hit the right temp required. So far 6 roast and none worth keeping. Not sure where I am going wrong . Any feedback please

Ive done 100g roast in ambient temps as low as 12deg with no problem.
It reads like you have a rare Crazy Popper that doesnt run too hot.

Theyre here and there I think.

                    In a nutshell:

If your Crazy Popper is a typical one that runs too fast you need to introduce some "thermal inefficiency".
1- Remove the base cover (replace with some plastic mesh for safety)
2- Remove the top half of the body or cut out large holes
3- Use a fan to blow across the chimney - this helps remove the chaff and also cools the roaster.

Heres a pic before the changes above.

You can read about the progress of the above popper in the following thread.

                      Re: First Popper roast

Thundergod thanks for the links lots of good reading. I have decided I must have the coolest Crazy Popper on the planet. The reason I tried popcorn was that I doubted there was enough heat to pop corn let alone raost coffee, however I was wrong.
I can hardly return under warranty because it does not roast coffee ! Looks like I need to buy temp probes so I can get a handle on what is going on. Very frustrating.

                        Nope.
                        Mine is the coolest. 8-)

                        Yours is the coldest.

Where are you to be getting such low ambient temperatures?

                          Re: First Popper roast

I also just tried my first roast last weekend. I ordered the beans from BeanBay on Thursday, received them on Friday, bought a Crazy Popper on Saturday and roasted them that same day. I roasted 3 batches of 80g of Peru Ceja de Selva Estate (unmodified popper). I tried my first coffee on Monday (ie 2nd day after roasting) and it tasted great - exceeded expectations. Couldnt believe how easy it was. Thanks to all on the forums for getting me on to this!

Youll have to try some other tricks then.

                              Like:

                              1) Putting the popper in a box to protect it somewhat from the cold surrounding air.
Remember not to block any of the inlet holes (underneath) because you still need it to breath.
If it were me Id be trying to deflect a little of the hot air back into the box.

                              2) Move to Brisbane.
