    Re: Roasting Stations

Mine is just a simple and neat one.

    Fold- a- table from Bunnings.
    Brevillle BB290 bread maker.
    Bosch 630 heatgun.
    Home made bean cooler.
    Compaq desktop pc and monitor.
    DMM logger.
Fan to blow chaff away from coretto.
    File with pen for notes.

Not shown is a pair of mittens for handling hot beans.
    Wooden spoon to inspect beans.
    Bin for storing beans.
    Scales and timer.

Roasting station resides in the garage to keep things civilized.

Ive dreamt about putting together a roasting station many times in the past, and now its come to fruition. Im happy

Mascots name is Chocymilky, hiding from Samantha the gold retriever who is waiting to pounce out of the picture shot hee hee. ;D

Im thinking of having a name for the coretto. Perhaps "Bean Burner" or "Bread Killer". What do you think Bigdog?

Then will also make a name for the bean cooler. "Siberia"??

            Re: Roasting Stations

I got inspired with the all the pictures below and decided to transform my temporary roasting station.

For the last 9 months I have been packing and unpacking my 2 Ikea trestles and planks (aka roasting station Mk1).
The results were excellent. But as one gets older and wiser one thinks....There must be better ways to do all this.

            SO...
I got a CS Data Logger.  Upgraded the coffee table my son made over 10 years ago and got to work. 2 days later....
The result is there to be seen. It weighs a ton. 1 zillion screws...no nails.
Everything has a place and nothing is not needed.

            Roasting Station Mk2.
            Specifications:

            Roasting Technology:
Kmart no name brand 2000 watt hG.
            Bosch drill press.
            Ikon Bread Maker.

            Data logging technology:
            EvilBay digital probe (highly inaccurate)
            CS Data logging setup.
            Samsung Netbook win 7 starter.
            Bean Cooler Technology:
Ryobi Blower Vac sucking via a 100mm sewer pipe to underneath a 400 mm plant pot. (works 110% - very happy with it).

I will run both the old manual system with the new system untill I get used to how it works.

The whole thing is on wheels with a shelf below for the storage of Beans etc.

I am happy with the result and did roast #28 today thought of a few minor updates to do before next roast in about 10 days time.

            Cheers

                Re: Roasting Stations

                Greetings all,

Been a member for a few months now, and thought this might be appropriate for a first post.
Roasting station is the dis-used BBQ. Breville bread maker has been lobotomised, with a single switch to control the paddle motor. The lid is a baking tray with a hole cut for the heatgun nozzle, with a hose clamp inside to hold it in place.  The lid over-hangs at the back, and most of the chaff goes out there. The 1600 watt GMC heatgun will take 600g of greens to first crack in 12 minutes, and second crack in just over 15 minutes.

The cooler is slightly under-powered for this size roast, but still adequate.

                Amanda

That sieve would easily fit a bucket style cooler when youre ready for more power.

                    Re: Roasting Stations

Fired up the Roastery Mk11 this morning.

Now here is a thought...If any of you are thinking of upgrading your roasting setup,
my suggestion is to get the data logger and have a bit (lot) more control of the temperature.

Have just done roast #31. My 2nd lot of Brasil Yellow Bourbon. Pulled the 1st lot (Roast #30) at 220 C.
This lot (Roast #31) held that bit extra to 225 C before pulling.  With the data logger it makes it so easy to see exactualy what is happening.
Now I know that this is no pro setup but I mean it in the DIY roasting sense of the word exactualy.

Roast #30 is one of the the nicest I have had.
Looking at the beans for #31, just that little bit darker...cant wait to taste.  ;D

                    ps.
Thanks again Macca2106 for getting me into home roasting.

Okay, heres the sad but cheap set-up I have going. Today, by inspiration from a post on cooling beans, I slapped together an automated cooler which will be run by my trusty vacuum cleaner .

Few nice setups in here! Think I really need to get a table and that set-up in my garage after I finish exams so I dont have to roast with the breadmaker on the ground!

I made some more mods this weekend to my BM. removed the heating element finally, and re-routed the temp sensors so they didnt trigger and ruin my roast.

The trusty floor tile Im using for my BM lid is just great too!
