    was using a secondhand popcorn maker rated at 1200 watts

    looks old as hell my old watch must have given up the ghost or the popcorn maker is not putting out the heat that quick as I noticed no smell or any smoke at all from it will go and buy a proper kitchen timer and then I will no if its the old popcorn maker or not ;D

    I hope thats a typo.
    I do 1 kg at a time in my BBQ and anything beyond 20 minutes has a good chance of being either baked or charcoal.

    Poppers usually struggle to cope with more than ~100 grams and are usually complete within 10 minutes.

    36 minutes? Im getting Second crack starting at about 9 minutes, with me pulling the roast at 12...

    How on earth are you able to extend the roast out past 15 minutes?

    Hi did my first roast to day a Ethiopian Harrar in a breville
    popcorn crazy popper the roast took 36 minutes and came out nice and dark. was checking it every minute as did not want to end up with burnt beans as this was my first time roasting it turned out really nice. I did not hear first or second crack but I think this was because of the noise of the popcorn maker sounds like a jet engine .

    also the weather this way was raining very hard and the roast was done out in the shed so had lots of moisture around which must have slowed the roast. after cooling the beans sat them for two hours then hand ground them in the porket and made a nice black espresso it tasted wonderful and I could smell vanilla tones and chocolate in the ground coffee.
    also the taste had earthy tones will be interesting to see how the coffee tastes after a couple of days yum.

    I did a couple more roasts with the omelette maker today. I tried putting in 1 cup of beans (didnt weigh beforehand but it came out at ~150g after roasting) and it seemed a bit easier. Not sure why. Maybe the bigger pile of beans holds the heat better. Or maybe Im just getting more familiar with the process.

    The roasts I did last week are tasting good. My favourites are the Peru and the Ghimbi.

    I didnt think just ordering it would work as the system is not geared up to send beans overseas, but hopefully you will be able to contact Andy now and get something sorted.

    Good idea - I will just order a color coded card ... UPDATE - No go on my order - does not allow for USA addresses.

    Seriously: Ethiopian beans are addictive.  As Mal said though - they are rather uneven.  Dont worry.  The photos of your roasts look fantastic. 

    If I were you Id seriously consider roasting a few batches to get the bean quantity up a bit then taste the roasted beans daily till theyre gone.  Write some notes on how they taste - even some tables with ticks in columns marked "acidic", "sharp", "chocolate", etc etc.  If you do that youll have a pretty simple guide to the best number of days to leave the beans unmolested.  Then all you need to do is to roast enough beans to get to that point 

    I wish my initial roasts looked as even as yours!  Great stuff!!

    Hi All Roasted my first Monsoon Malabar this morning. What a bitch to roast.

    Slow slow slow BANG oh it hit 2nd crack already. Where the hell did that come from.

    I use an iRoast 2.
    160 - 2min
    180 - 2min
    200 - 2min
    160 - 5min

    Knowing it would do the full 11 mins inthe roaster i had fully expected to hit cool about 2-3 mins into the last 160 cycle.

    So what happened in reality ?
    I had read a little about it prior to roasting. Tips i had were - Start slow. Easy into 1st and then up to almost 2nd and drop the heat and let it coast....Also advised the beans are bigger and reduce the amount to allow them to jump around etc.

    Ok so we hit the GO button.
    Warm day here in Brissy.
    And were off. The temp hits 182 with 9mins left on the clock. Although i am not sure that the temp is really that accurate.
    Hear the first crack at about 200 deg and 6:33 to go. this continues for about 1 min.
    The tem hits 209 with 5 mins to go and then slowly drops to 205 at 4min and then BANG 2nd Crack starts.
    I cool it there and it runs the 4min cool down .. meen while the beans are slowly cooking and i can hear them screeming .

    The result......
    i took 2 photos
    First was taken outside with natural light
    then i saw that other had the CS Card next tot he beens and i thought what a great idea so took a second (inside with Flash)
