Yeah, me too. My local store had heaps of them and still at $11 too. And there is a lot of information earlier in this thread about how to modify them to slow them down and extend the roasting times even more.

      • After a few disasters, I've had some recent success with the following formula.

        80gms of beans.

Do this bit in front of a pedestal fan:
Run for 30 seconds without the yellow chute, stirring with a wooden spoon.
Turn off for 30 seconds and stir continuously.
Run for 30 seconds, stirring occasionally.
Turn off for 30 seconds and stir continuously.

Follow this pattern until the 5 minute mark and then let it run until first crack. This has been happening anywhere from about 7 minutes.

First crack is normally over and done with by 8.30.

Put the yellow chute on and turn off the pedestal fan. Run until 10.30 and stop.

Cool beans quickly in front of the fan, whilst tipping them between two colanders.

        • Hey Guys,

First post here, thanks for all of the information this blog has provided - it's a wealth of knowledge!

I got the sampler back from Beanbay, and this is the result of my first roast of the Peru Ceja de Selva beans. I reached second crack on these, however haven't had as much luck with any other of the beans. Up to 20 minutes in the popcorn maker without a second crack. The temperature has been around 21-23 degrees (I'm in Brisbane). I'm wondering if perhaps there isn't enough heat to get the beans going? I think i'm going to give the Bread maker and heat gun setup a shot next, to get a bit more control of the temperature. Either way, I'm pretty pleased with the result of the first roast. The bean lacks a little body, but I used them only 2 days after roasting (I couldn't wait!) I'm assuming there will be more flavour the longer I leave them.

          • Just a heads up for anybody in Adelaide who is interested in cheap poppers ....... Target on Unley Road Unley have the poppers as shown on page one of this thread reduced to $7.00 at the moment. As of yesterday there were 2 or 3 left after I took one home ...... to make popcorn . You can also grab a milkshake maker or muffin maker for the same price.

            Cheers

            Stinky.
