Re: Question about bread maker
Looks good. Doesnt look like you have many beans in there?
I initially had a piece of aluminium plate placed diagonally across the bowl, and at an approximate angle of 45 degrees. This forced all the chaff out the opposite side to the gun and it did not get sucked up into the guns intake.

Re: Question about bread maker
I have a very similar setup to Artman.
I found a breadmaker for $25 on gumtree, bargained them to $20, and was prepared to modify it if needed. But I was lucky and it has the dough setting which works great. I took the lid off and thats it.
$35 Ozito heat gun, on full and slighly above lip of breadmaker, then raised a bit after 1st crack.
I used the stand from a pair of floodlights to mount my heat gun (using duct tape!), bunnings have them for $25 on sale. I mounted the floodlights over my work bench and had the stand sitting idle. Its good because it allows me to adjust the height up and down on the fly.
I have spent a further $25-ish on a leaf blower, bucket, and fly screen to make a cooler.
I havent bothered with a lid as it all works great how it is.
Here is my first ever roast:

Re: Question about bread maker
Hi Arcenite,
The bread maker i recieved free came with no manual. However after a bit of tinkering i found that like it goes for up to 30 mins also in the stiring mode. I think you will fine this the case for most bread makers as as the bread needs to be kneeded for sometime.
FWIW...you may want to consider putting up a notice at your work, or looking on gumtree as soemtimes people are selling these things second hand for a real bargin. I got mine from a person at work who didnt want it and said i can have it for free.
Good luck with it all
regards
Chris

Re: Question about bread maker
Hi Arcenite
I have a Breville BBM 100 - stirs for 1/2 hour on dough setting. Can buy them for about $90 brand new - or much less 2nd hand - even new its a cheap roaster with great results!

Re: Question about bread maker
well thats how I do it. I have it mounted on a drill press type rig, and just slide it up/down. My gun is a cheapo ozito, has 2 fan speeds and a heat adjustment (crude rheostat by the looks of it), but I just leave it at full blast and raise it at first crack by a couple of cm.
I used to do it without a lid, but then got a piece of aluminium and had it angled across the diagonal of the bread tin, which directed the chaff away to one side, which then landed on the floor for easy clean up, and kept it away from the suction holed of the gun.
I use a blower vac on suction to cool the beans through a sieve, cools them in less than a minute.

Re: Question about bread maker
it is addictive, i had a couple of popcorn makers and already i need to move up to something bigger like one of these. I have made a outlet for the hot air and hopefully any chaff as well. With anything its trial and error i guess.
Artman are you saying that i should leave the heat gun on the same temp all the way through and just move it back to adjust the temp? I was thinking since i can adjust the temp and fan speed on the heat gun i would do that, or maybe not???

Re: Question about bread maker
I did heaps of roasts before I got my data logger. Just make sure the heat can escape somewhere (ie in and out path) and that the lid material can take the heat.
I set the gun on full power/heat, the nozzle about 3-5cm above the top of the pan (no lid), wait until first crack (usually 10-15 mins), then raise gun a couple of cms and continue until second crack, then dump and cool as quickly as possible.
If your breadmaker trips a fault (usually due to the heat), you can move the temp sensor to a cool spot. This only happened on my first bread maker if I tried to do successive roasts.
Have fun! Its addictive and you will never look back.

Re: Question about bread maker
I have prepared everything to do a roast tomorrow morning. I have done a lot of reading tonight. I have decided to leave the lid on, but have made a hole for the heat gun to sit in. The bread maker i got didnt have a manual, so i had to figure out how it worked. In my case i have been able to set the kneading time to 25 plus mins to allow for continued stirring action.
I will see how it all pans out tomorrow, mind you i dont have a temp reader yet so i will have to go by sight and instinct if any
cheers

Re: Question about bread maker
As long as you can set it so it stirs for at least ~20 mins then you can use it as is. maybe remove the lid as it will probably get in the way.
Cheers

Re: Question about bread maker
The bread maker is a breville ultimate bakers oven series 3. As for the age of it i dont quite know as yet. I intend on using a heat gun for the roasting.
Thanks
