  • First ever home roast with Behmor - uneven looks

    Hi everyone

This is my first post on this forum. Been reading everyday here for a while. I have to say this is a very addictive place. Finally ordered and received the Behmor. Very fast delivery! Thanks Andy.

Tried my first attempt at home roasting today with the Peru beans. I used a small batch of 75g to start with, just to get to know the machine without wasting too much.
set on 1/4lb P3 C, heard the onset of first crack when 2.5min left. Just when I was vigilantly watching the machine, my MOBILE RANG! Totally distracted and ended the roast while probably still in 1st crack. Couldnt help tasting it just in a few hours - very sour and grassy.

Second try I preheated the machine for 2 min before putting in the beans. still 75g, same setting as above. 1st crack lasted about 1 min and continued onto what i believe was second crack. I did open the door upon 1c to slow it down, but didnt seem to work. Hit cool after 10seconds into 2c, and noticed some smoke coming out of the slightly opened door. More darker compared to 1st batch. But quite uneven looking.

3rd batch of 75g I switched to P2 setting. Programmed total time is 10min. Very strange that the 1st crack occurred almost at 5.30min remaining. Opened door slightly to prolong the 1c2c interval, still no effect, went straight into 2c. Quite a bit of smoke coming out. Had to hit cool. Even darker roast. But again looked uneven.

My question: Is 75g batch too small to roast evenly and to achieve a good 1c-2c interval?

sorry I havent got the CS card as reference for the pictures.

For what it is worth its a pretty good first attempt, Its hard to judge by pictures sometimes. The first one to me Looks pretty good in being the most even, although on the lighter side still looks good to me. the last one looks a little uneven but i think you may find some types of beans do that anyway. Dont quote me though.

At the end of the day its how it tastes that counts....

        Cheers

        Chris

FWIW, those are really good pictures lol

ive not tried roasting such small batches as yet
the minimum size ive been roasting is about 175g of greens
if SO, they come out decently even
if blend, they may be all over the shop

          thats my experiences so far

if youre using P2 you may want to up the batch size a touch, as its pretty well full power for the first half or 60% of the roast time

the gap between first and second with p3/p4/p5 can be controlled by opening the door to the first stop at the end of first (for me anyway)

my first batch I used similar settings to you with P2 but roasted aroudn 150g and the beans were too dark, next time I paid more attention and the roast was pretty good

thanks guys for your suggestions. Will try a larger batch in a few days. Tasted the 2nd batch today with my presso, I think I went a bit too fine and choked the machine. But did get a good stream after I let go of the lever a little bit. It was quite drinkable! Well balanced. Not very bitter at all.
