  • A plea to all popper roasters – consider an upgrade to something better!

    I have long held the view that the weak link in my coffee making was my machine - a Sunbean 6910.

    I thought my popper roaster was pulling its weight. Or so I thought.

    After my popper died an overheating death, I decided to get a Behmor. I’d read some good things and decided to take the plunge.

    What a difference a slow roast makes! I was expecting a flavour lift of 20-30pc.

    How wrong I was.

    For me, the flavour and quality of the coffee I am now drinking is 50-70pc better than the popper! There is a new-found richness, molasses and strength of flavour that just wasn’t there. Each flavour is more honest, full and complex.

    For me, the popper’s heat and speed seems to dull the flavours - now I’ve learnt!

    Don’t get me wrong, popper roasting is awesome and far, far better than buying beans, but it isn’t going to get you close to coffee perfection!

    I know the alternative roasting methods are more expensive (:&lt but if you are contemplating a new machine and you are on a popper, perhaps you might consider an upgraded roaster as the first port of call.

      Theyre a great little domestic roaster jb. Nevertheless, rather than running 10 of them and saving megabucks, I chose to buy a commercial roaster.

        My four roasts the other day were 1C at 10 minutes and 2C at 14 minutes approximately 8-)

          I agree with shapeshifter - I get great roasts from  my popper too. I can control the roast profile to almost anything I want. But I would love to do the same roast profile on something like the Behmor and a modded popper and compare the result. Someone must have played that game??

            just wondering, im using a 900w popper and getting 100g of beans to 1C at 5min and 2C at 11-12min. Is that a decent roast profile? also will increasing the batch and adding a chimney increase roasting time and would anyone recommend that, or are the timing im currently getting about spot on?

            Im quite happy with what im getting in the cup, but is it the case of ignorance is bliss? Am i missing out on a much better roast just by simply altering my method slightly?

              Those times are quite acceptable - especially since you like what youre getting in the cup. Increasing the batch size will decrease the roast time, I dont think adding a chimney would make any difference - you only need the chimney to stop the beans from jumping out when they get a bit lighter.

              Your last question is the eternal one - its nice, but could it be nicer??? Theres lots of info about roast profiles for poppers on the net and lots of opinions about whats good and whats not. Unfortunately (depending how you look at it ), from what Ive found over the last year or so, theres only a few hard rules (eg, as you roast longer you loose the character of the particular bean youre roasting). But this means theres lots of room for experimenting to find what works best for you.

                So, would you describe them as light, medium or dark???

                I would describe most of them as medium, the exceptions are the ones I roast for syphon which are definitely light.

                Dark = black and oily and I wont go there

                  I guess the issue is your personal preference.
                  If you like more acidity in your cup, youll be fine with a popper.
                  If you want more body, youll need to upgrade to a drum roaster.
