I have long held the view that the weak link in my coffee making was my machine - a Sunbean 6910.
I thought my popper roaster was pulling its weight. Or so I thought.
After my popper died an overheating death, I decided to get a Behmor. I’d read some good things and decided to take the plunge.
What a difference a slow roast makes! I was expecting a flavour lift of 20-30pc.
How wrong I was.
For me, the flavour and quality of the coffee I am now drinking is 50-70pc better than the popper! There is a new-found richness, molasses and strength of flavour that just wasn’t there. Each flavour is more honest, full and complex.
For me, the popper’s heat and speed seems to dull the flavours - now I’ve learnt!
Don’t get me wrong, popper roasting is awesome and far, far better than buying beans, but it isn’t going to get you close to coffee perfection!
I know the alternative roasting methods are more expensive (:<
but if you are contemplating a new machine and you are on a popper, perhaps you might consider an upgraded roaster as the first port of call.
Happy slow roasting.
