Its only calculating profit on the cost of goods, not net operating profit!

Oops, I didnt mean to share my blend names...

Truth be told, I havent yet blended the #4 blend, I am doing this post-roast and it still needs a couple more days to rest.

Heres my very basic roasting log, feel free to use as you see fit.
Pretty good, but not sure what you mean by "profit", I think you mean cost savings? Youve factored in the weight loss in roasting from green but no overheads allocated like electricity, albeit it would be minor, and if you are including total costs it should include the cost of a valve bags (if you use them which I do). No doubt we save money by roasting our own though. Yes theres the labour and time part but most of us dont think of it as work but fun!

How does Spjarli #4 roast and whats it like in the cup?

Thrilled with the Behmor 1600 and inspired to go on to greatness!
The good news is that now you have started the roasting journey it just gets better!

Keep track of the weights and settings you use and what your "tasting notes" are a week later. You will build a knowledge base that will give you a good starting point for future roasts too.

A word of warning though... soon you will be roasting for friends, family and work mates who will have some of the best coffee they have ever tried.

Welcome to the "not so dark side" javaQH.

    Hi javaQH

behmor is dead simple as you say, if you havnt looked at it already, you might want to check out behmorthing / roasterthing, it was originally designed with the behmor roaster in mind and can track roasts with times / weight / profiles etc

the profiles and timings on it may not be 100% accurate as its based on the US spec behmor but they would be pretty close

    Re: Starting out on Behmor

Hi, Saturday I had my first roast with the demo Behmor and Peru beans I bought off Andy at the MICE.   ;D
    Thanks Andy.
It was 225g P1 B with the door closed till cooling finished and resulted in a lovely dark (I dont have a CS card) roast.  Rested for two days.  After getting my grind right I pulled two good looking shots.  My boyfriend and I sat down to try the brew.  VERY HAPPY!  Hopefully I can keep producing roasts as good if not better than this in the future - no pressure... Hope I havent peaked too soon.
I have to agree, it all seems remarkably simple.  Thrilled with the Behmor 1600 and inspired to go on to greatness!

I like to keep a log of all my roasts, including times for the start (very first pops), middle (rolling) and end (last pops) of 1C and the start of 2C. I record any continuation of 2C in the cooling cycle.

Im just now drinking the Columbian Beans I roasted leaving the door shut the whole time even while cooling and it is a lovely roast - best yet. P2, 1lb, C setting. Pressed cool with around 5 or 6 minutes to go - rolling second crack while cooling. Dark roast but really nice.
For the latest roast, I left the door closed the whole time and time between 1C and 2C was ~3:30. The beans seemed decent, havent actually tasted them yet. This all seems too easy, hit start and let the Behmor do its thing

I also do about 315g on the 1lb p2 c setting.  I track all my roasts with roasterthing and usually hit 1st crack just as the temp drops.  Then Ill normally get 2nd crack occurring at about 16:40, hit cool immediately, open the door and remove the chaff holder, and point a small pedestal fan in to try and cool the beans quicker.  This usually gives me a batch of CS9 or so but sometimes Ill open at 16:30ish to get more like CS8.
I read about Roasterthing somewhere before. How accurate are the profiles? I understand there could be differences between how the American Behmor is setup?

I consider 1st crack as when you get more than 1 crack a second so usually 5-10 seconds after the very first 1st crack.  For 2nd crack I hit cool as soon as I hear the very first 2nd crack because the heat mass of the beans keeps the beans roasting for a while even after youve stopped the machine.

Yeh will try leaving the door shut for the whole time next roast. Interestingly, the last roast I did (where I wedged open the door only during 1st crack), the roast times were unchanged from when I would leave the door open from 1C to the end of the roast....

I think you need to reduce the time between first and second crack 7 mins is too long. Best way to do that is to keep the door shut.

I think Ill keep on opening the door for now. CS12 is probably a bit dark for my tastes. Been getting CS10 which is to my liking...

Btw, extremely happy with the ease of operation with the Behmor. It doesnt even feel like Im really roasting

I would leave the door closed the same time if it was me. Im doing that with 312g, 1lb/P2/C and I press cool when second crack starts and let if roll through second crack while cooling. Been leaving the door closed the whole time. Nice dark CS12 roasts.
