  • The Ghetto Coretto Bean Cooler

Just thought Id share my "Ghetto Coretto bean cooler." This cost me $8 for the bucket. If you have a cheaper cooler design, let me know!

I find it works quite well for batches up to about 300g, cool to touch after maybe 1.5 mins.

The box (with hole) holds the fan steady. The hinges on the bucket have been split and act as claws to stabilise the bucket on the fan. I will add some more smaller holes for more airflow but theres enough to be surprisingly effective already.

And although it looks like theres big holes, no beans actually seem to escape down beside the cardboard walls.

    Wow, that is cheap!!

You should cover up the outside of the fan shroud upto the bucket, to force more of the airflow into cooling the beans.

    Cheers

Thats pretty smart thinking, even down to the stable looking open box. Great idea.

          While were sharing heres mine.

The grey drum contains a fan which pushes air upwards, the black filter is made from fly screen.

Doesnt work as well as I thought it would - I havent been able to completely cool beans in less than 90-120 seconds.

I think a lot of the other guys here who go to cool in around 30!

I use a garden blower vac on suction, cools ~500g of beans VERY quickly, the airflow is huge, but so is the noise, need ear muffs!! Must time it next time, but they are cool to touch shortly after firing it up.

              Cheers

                  LOL,

Everytime i see this i have a chuckle...

My method for fast cooling is colander with a very similar el-cheapo bunning fan with the pivoting gears that are no longer operating correctly and a stand that is very unfit for purpose so fan must be hand held and just held above the colander.

What makes the fan that extra bit of Ghetto-esk is the fact it never spun smoothly, it seems the high quality (sarcasm) chinese built motor doesnt rotate centraly so the entire fan wobbles on any speed, obviously the higher the speed the more wobble, but all adds to the flavour ;D

btw i get a patent on this baby ASAP, i can see certain large chains of stores stocking these soon.
The packaging box will become part of the stand, however instructions will indicated 1 Box end must remain open for that added structural integrity

Re: The Ghetto Coretto Bean Cooler

The box end open is actually a highly advanced suspension system for soaking up vibrations.

In all seriousness the box still works as a box despite the large hole in one side. So in between roasts it holds my green bean sacks, scoop, stirring spoon, leather garden gloves (add $1.47 from bunnings), chaff wiping rag, and any other bits and pieces.

So theres some extra design efficiency any engineer would be jealous of
