    Finally got the bits and pieces of my Corretto (mostly) together, just finished my first roast ever, 250g of Brazil Pulped Natural, pretty happy with how it looks cant wait to see how it tastes.

    Corretto is a Tiffany BM ($20 op shop pickup) and a cheap Ozito variable temperature HG (Bunnings ~$40), bean cooler is your standard issue Bunnings bucket-exhaust-fan-and-sieve job (thinking I need a second lid with a smaller sieve in it for smaller batches, current one is about right for 500g but you have to stir 250g quite a bit to get them cooled quickly), Ill post a photo next time Ive got it set up, one thing Ill say about Correttos though, theyre effective but damn are they noisy...

    Pretty happy with this one, seems to be about CS9-10 1C at 14:30 R1C at 17:05, pulled at what I think was the start of 2C (pull was somewhat forced by the 20 min max cycle on the BM, Ill mod it at some point to be free running (Yes, I am a qualified Electrical/Electronic Engineer), save waiting at the start too (pulsed for ~1min then continuous) in the mean time I think if I drop the HG a bit at the start Ill get to 1C a bit quicker which will give me more time to play with between 1C and 2C)

    hi Jbrewster,

    Not a bad effort for your first time, Its hard to tell from pictures sometimes but would you say its about a c10-c11 on the card?
    They can be a bit noisy when running the bread maker and HG, i dont run mine past about 9pm at night incase i annoy someone in the area(mind you i have had no complaints). The cost of setting up these corretto is pretty cheap and great to learn with.

      Hi Chris,

      I think its closer to 10 than 11 the picture is a bit deceptive as I had to use a flash so the beans look shinier than they are.

      Yeah, I ran this roast in my garage, fortunately there is nobody living in the house on that side of mine at the moment, but if they eventually get some tenants in I shall have to curtail my late-night roasting.

        They look good the beginning of second crack is a good staring point for roasting.

        It is suggested that a pause at about 150C will produce a different coffee because of the Maillard reaction.

        As long as you like it what everybody else thinks id secondary.

          Thanks for the tip, Ill keep that in mind.

          Yeah, Im excited to try this lot but itll have to wait until Saturday morning, hopefully the result is good in the cup.

          First run has already taught me some things about my setup and thermal management, next run Ill have the HG closer to the bean mass, hopefully thatll speed up first crack a bit and give me more time to play with between first and second.

            Second and third roasts, theyre both a bit shallow I think, I was running up against it with the 20 min max stir time on the Tiffany. Ive since modded it to run continuously.

            Second roast was the Colombian Volcan Galaras Supremo looks like a CS7, the colour in the photo is a bit off, its darker than it looks there, flash was a bit bright.
            Third was Peru Ceja de Selva looks to be about a CS7-8.

            Lost my TC about 2 mins into the Second roast so I dont have a temperature profile, Ive since adjusted my setup so that the TC will hopefully stay in the bean mass.

              the third one with the peru looks pretty good, probably the lighter side for espresso, you may find the 2nd roast to be a bit acidic and citrusy from the lighter roast

              it may however work really well in a plunger or similar brewing method if you have one

              all up thats an effort to be proud of for you first 3 roasts

                Theyre a bit darker than they appear in those photos, looking at it again in the flesh theyre more like CS8-9, the Peru is actually a touch lighter than the Colombian I think.

                Comparison shot attached (excuse my hideous handwriting), hopefully theyre OK for espresso but if not, Im sure I can dredge up a plunger from somewhere (or use it as an excuse to buy a syphon...) thanks again for the tips.

                Problem was mainly lighting I think, I pulled both at what I thought sounded like the start of 2C but they were a lot lighter in the cooler than they looked in the roaster, figure judging that is something that will come with experience.

                Upshot is with the new mod to the BM Im not limited to 19 mins max for a roast so if something takes a little longer than anticipated its not such a big deal.

                Thanks for the supportive comments too Ive another 17kg of greens on the way from Andy, I reckon by the time Im through that lot (and the ~3.5kg Ive already got) Ill have a much better feel for things

                  id say those should both be ok for espresso

                  I usually end up with something from cs8 - cs10 and have found anything within those numbers to be suitable in my silvia

                  id probably call yours cs8.5 to be picky, they look more suitable to espresso in that closer picture

                    Yeah, I figure theyre a bit on the light side, well see how they go in another day or so

                    Roasting up some Ethiopian and perhaps some Decaf - Wow! tonight, well see how it goes post-mod on the BM.

                      have you actually tried them yet?

                      (I cant see any mention of you trying them?)

                      if its your first couple of roasts you may benefit from trying them each day to get a feel of what your tastes may be like since you are now roasting for yourself

                        Heh funny you should mention that, I was leaving them lie for a few days, tried them both as espresso last night, verdict is, the peru was nice and balanced, maybe a touch bright but that might moderate over the next couple of days, and the colombian was pretty smooth

                        Oh and I tried the Brazil about three days post roast, its very non-descript, only really got "earthy" out of it probably a bit too dark (last I looked my beans were *very* oily)

                        Im intending to keep sampling them over the next few days to see how the develop.

                        As for the latest roasts;

                        The Ethiopian is pretty varied colour-wise green, evened out a bit post roast but theres still a lot of variation there, certainly more than previous roasts so itll be interesting to see how it drinks (though I must say, Im not a fan of Ethiopians as SO, a bit acidic for my tastes, mainly intending to use it for blending).

                        The Decaf - Wow was a *very* different roast, not sure if its due to the beans being decaf or what but I didnt get an audible first crack. That said, my ramp up was pretty slow so that might be it. Roasted by temperature not colour as Andy suggests, pulled the beans at 212 degrees and smoke.

                          I dont think they are too light at all especially for the Peru, Columbian or Brazillian being quite mild and neutral beans. A lighter roast gives you more opportunity to taste the bean than the roast itself. I personally aim for CS9 for most of my roasts unless I know a particular bean would benefit from a deeper roast, like the Sumatran Lintong I have

                            I generally roast to a CS9 and I only drink short blacks ,my wife drinks milk based, so I find the beans best from about day 7 post roast but ok from about day 4 if drinking milk based

                            I roast about 550g of greens about 1 week in advance so I`m using beans from approx day 7-14 thats my personal sweet :P spot

                              Thanks guys, yeah, Im thinking CS9 is about the sweet spot for me (at least for espresso, with these beans) the lack of definition in the Brazil, Im pretty sure is due to it being a bit overdone, might roast up another batch tomorrow night and see how that goes.
