  • First roast

    A package of green beans arrived from Coffee Snobs this morning. I was going to wait until the weekend but... well, Im sure I dont need to explain.

    This is my first coffee roast. Admittedly, the results may not be any good at all, but it was fun, much easier than I expected and less smoke than I expected.

    I bought a Whirley Pop from Peters of Kensington a few days ago, heated it up on the gas stove top, put 250 grams of Indian Monsoon Malabar in and started stirring. Clearly I overdid the first batch. Tried again a short while later and removed the beans as soon as the second crack started. I used a couple of colanders to cool the beans as quickly as I could.

    Any advice on storing (hopefully its not dont bother storing that lot) would be great to have. And any advice on how to improve my next roast would be very, very welcome.

    Ideally you should be storing the beans in a sealed bag with a CO2 valve...so for example, the type of bag you might buy already roasted beans in (if it is resealable). Otherwise, you can buy they from from Coffeesnobs quite cheaply. You can add a CS member card to your next order for free as well.

    Something to keep in mind- Ive observed from my own experiences that the roast level affects the relationship between grind level, flow rate and extraction. Therefore IMO there is not too much to gain from using improperly roasted beans to say adjust your grind or practise dosing. So thats perhaps a mistake I was making when I ruined some batches and tried to use those beans to improve my technique.

    Anywho your second batch looks much better than your first, and ultimately it comes down to what YOU like when you finally drink those beans. Itll take a while to get your roasting technique sorted, some will get burned and others will be under-roasted, but make sure you stick with it

      I purchased a few sealed bags with a CO2 valve along with the beans. But I seem to recall reading somewhere to leave the beans in an open jar for the first 12-24 hours after roasting.

      Your second para. Does that mean that neither batch is worth keeping? I put a small scoop of that second batch next to a scoop of professionally-roasted beans and the colour and consistency seem very similar.  (The beans are actually much more uniform than they look in the photo).

        Bag and seal the beans when they reach a couple degrees above ambient when youre cooling them.

          Try the batch on the right, they look alright. The batch on the left may be too charred though.

            the ones on the left look like theyre a little bit over, could be your camera showing them darker than they are though, the second roast is certainly the better of the 2 but a bit inconsistent

            250 grams sounds like a lot of beans to be putting in a popper, id try 150 grams - when I was popper roasting I found my best results were with 120 - 150 grams, I needed to agitate the beans a bit to get them moving then the popper did the rest for me

              I believe Whirley Pop is a stovetop popcorn maker (shallow pan with a hand cranked agitator) not an air popper

                Thanks folks, all very much appreciated. The Whirley Pop is a stove top popcorn saucepan, very lightweight but seems to do the job. I roasted two more batches of 250 grams yesterday. Brazil Pullped Natural on the right (pulled at 2nd crack) and Peru Ceja de Selva on the left (pulled just before 2nd crack).

                My main difficulty was controlling the temperature. I followed the instructions on the Sweet Maria site and heated the Whirley Pop to around 200 before dropping the beans in. The temp then starts to go down quite rapidly to below 150. On the Peru (which I roasted after the Brazil) I compensated by moving the Whirley to a bigger flame, but this may have been the wrong thing to do and I pulled the beans out before 2nd crack for fear of burning them.

                Very keen to get one of the FZ-RR 700 next, but feel like I need to make a bit more progress with the Whirley first.

                    congrats on the first roast jay!

                    just curious what the bean agitation on the whirleypop is like?
                    im not sure if its the camera lighting affecting it but it seems like some beans were charred in a few spots?

                      The beans look a bit more uniform than the photo indicates, but there are definitely inconsistencies and Im still pondering how to get an even roast.

                      The inside of the Whirley has two thin(ish) wire arms that stir the beans. Obviously they were designed to shift popcorn around, not coffee beans. I have some doubts about how effective they are if I just stir by rotating the handle and have tried to counter that by lifting the pan off the stove every minute or so and giving it a careful shake - the careful bit is because the whole thing seems a bit flimsy and Im worried about the lid coming off and creating instant kitchen chaos and an ensuing ban on any further roasting. Any advice would be gratefully received.

                        oh wow yes

                        id say 2 thin wire arms would not be agitating the beans enough to provide a nice even roast.

                        looks like some modification to help agitation of the beans would be a good step to take. perhaps making some sort of paddle attachments?

                            you might want to check out the couple of threads on correto and KKTO roasting systems

                            I think in one of the KKTO threads there is some discussion on bean agitation, paddles and so on which might be helpful in modifying your whirly

                              Considering your lovely looking coffee hardware in the background, my suggestion would be making the leap to a Coretto system.

                              You can find a suitable bread maker for ~$20 from gumtree or op-shop, and the ozito heat gun is ~$30 new at bunnings. That is all you really need, and something to fix the heat gun to. You would then get good, consistent, even roasts, and you can do up to 500g at a time. Then you can concentrate on the actual roast rather than the physical action of keeping it stirred, that whirly looks like hard work on the wrists after 20 mins.
