  • 1st time roaster using Cornelius popper

    Hi all,

1st time poster, 1st time roaster.

Got my starter pack in the mail today and was roasting within an hour of getting home and putting the kids to bed. Did 75g of the Columbian Volcan Galeras Supremo and hit 1st Crack at 3.50. I was gonna just let it run through but I thought it was happening too fast so I stalled the popper a few times to stir leading up to 2nd crack at 9.20 when I pulled it and cooled it. I didnt really know what I was listening for so the 1C and 2C times may be a bit off but it was great fun and I think it turned out okay. Id put I photo on here buy I dont really know how to.

One question though. Am i gonna ruin the kids popcorn popper? Coz if I do, theyre gonna be pd

At the very least you will discolour the roasting chamber with oils from the beans baking on.

it is in fact, quite likely that you may possibly ruin their popcorn popper, if nothing else, the accumulated coffee oils on the metal surface doesnt really go well with buttered popcorn

That, and those popcorn poppers tend to not like being run for longer then two minutes...

But having said that, Glad you had fun with the roast, Hopefully it tastes as good in the cup as the stuff that others achieve!

Ive got a Cornelius that I found for $10 at Cash Converters, and I usually run it for about 20 minutes at a time.
9 months on, its still going strong and probably could be used to pop popcorn, though Im not sure if the coffee bean staining on the inside would affect the popcorn flavour.

I recommend buying another popper for popcorn use.

Thanks for the advice everybody. Ill have to start looking around for a second popper then. Ill also have to figure out how to post pictures so I can show off my roast and get some feedback but Ive never been a forum person before but there was just so much good info on here that I felt compelled to join in.
