  • Best beans for popcorn roasting

    I'm looking at buying some green beans from coffeesnobs ...but reading the bean descriptions i'm wondering if there are certain beans that are more suited to the quick roasting that happens in a popper .....and I guess more importantly are there certain beans that are not suited for popper roasting. I read one review of a bean that said it suited a longer or slower roast - I'm guessing beans like this might not be suited to a popper.

    Have you thought of getting the starter pack? When i started with the popcorn roaster i was advised to get the starter pack. Its good as it gives you a variety of different beans from different contients. There is no one type of bean which would be better, though some of the beans i have found are easier to roast that others. A good start is the Peru ceja, thats what i have found anyway someone else may have a different view on it.

      Thanks Chris ... I have looked at the starter pack yeah. might get it. I'm not actually total newbie - been roasting 18 months or so - but never ordered from here. The place I get my beans has 4-6 types so I try them all ...but reading descriptions of all the different beans here made me wonder if there are some that are really no good for popper and ones that excel in them. Even though I've been roasting for a while I really haven't read that much about it apart from researching here a little bit when I first got into it so my knowledge is pretty limited.

      actually I have another question....seeing as there is little control in a popper is there any point using a thermometer ? does anyone do this ? I suppose it might help knowing when to stop the roast

        Seconding the starter pack, you'll get 500g each of 4 SOs then you can try it out to see how you go before you start buying coffee in 2.5kg bags

          actually i kinda liked the idea of the cheap postage on the 2.5kgs in Beanbay. If i get 2 types then if one is not to my taste I can blend it out with the other etc. ...but all that aside I'm just curious what kind of beans suit or dont suit a popper

            It'll tell you what your roast profile is but the benefit is debatable as you won't really be able to control it (there are some mods which will get you more control in a popper but not significantly so), I've heard of some people doing it, personally I went straight to a Corretto setup because I felt that the popper path wasn't likely to provide me with the results I was after and the control to experiment.

              Harder beans like Ethiopians might be more suited to popper roasting, they require quite a bit of heat early on (I believe KJM said it best "where's the oxy?").

              Stuff like the Peru CdS requires a bit of finessse, and a slower ramp so that's probably not so suited to popper roasting.

                  I've roasted the Peru CdS, a Vietnamese SO, Ethiopian Ghimli and India Elephant hills. My best result (in a popper) was with the Peru.

                    I've only just started out using a popper and bought the starter pack. I've been experimenting a bit by stopping the popper at intervals to slow it down and all of the beans have come up nicely. I'm loving the popper but I think I'm gonna need a Behmor soon coz the 70grams I churn out in the popper doesn't last long although it does mean I "have" to roast more often.

                      Hmmm, kinda surprised about that, what was it about the other roasts that you didn't like? Or rather that you found less desirable than the Peru?

                        I'd really like more opinions on which beans to try with a popcorn roaster but more so - What beans do you prefer overall?
                        I don't know which ones to buy and im new to roasting

                          Did the starter pack thing with mixed results. I just got 2 1/2 kg of Yirgacheffe and did my first batch tonight. Roasted up OK (looks like a CS 9) and I'll let you know in a few days how it tastes.

                            Get the Peru Ceja.
                            Easy to roast, works through a range of roast depths and different roasters.
                            100's of CoffeeSnobs learnt their craft on this bean.

                            ...and at $1 a roast in a popper its cheap enough to learn on.
