And nor should you Bruce... nor should you! I feel a bit silly using them as my first roasted bean! I think Ill try with a "normal" bean to reduce a few variables next time. Little person will cope with a little bit of caffeine - as she gets bigger she handles it better anyway.

    Thanks again

    Meg

Thats why the Corretto is SOOOOOOOOO much better - anything from about 150 grams to 700 grams.... same heat setting and ambient temperature makes far less difference. ;D
    SOOOOOOOO True JB 8-)

Is there something wrong with my popper? 50g to stretch to 7minutes, roasting 50g in my popper would probably go charcol in 30mins havnt acctually tried it though. But the times with 100g is a huge difference. :-?
Nope... nothing wrong with your popper.

As the volume is reduced there are less beans to restrict the airflow..... more air through the elements = lower temperature = longer roasting time.

The most serious limitation with popper roasting is the range of bean volumes which will give a good result is limited (and varies from popper to popper).... Too little and it takes too long, too much and the beans will overcook really fast and uneven..... You have to get the volume "just right" for your popper- and that volume will change dependant on ambient temperature (bigger volumes when the temperature is lower)

Be aware of your ambient (outdoor) temperatures too. If it is a hot day, your roast will be quicker as Hazbean and I found out when we reached cut off on the popper one day.

I have found that by roasting on a cooler day it stretches out the roasting times by a few minutes.

    Hi Meg,
I used to roast in a popper but switched to HG and DB for all the reasons you have pointed out. Too fast, too noisy, not enough control.
    Definitely lacking real body
My understanding is that the very fast popper roasts tend to leave the beans with a much lighter body and brighter taste, extending the time between 1x and 2x to 4min+ will allow the sugars to caramelise and the flavour and body to develop.   Having said that I have no experience with decaff [smiley=wink.gif].

You said your 100g roasts were taking 7-8 minutes so that seems normal.
I dont know why 50g is taking so long.
    Yours might just be special.

So long as you are aware of the time difference batch size makes you make the allowances.
I hear the newly released Crazy Poppers are very slow now as opposed to my super fast one.

Roast more...try 150 grams and see if that slows your roast down.
More will speed up the roast due to thermal mass.
To roast slower you need a smaller batch.

I have a Crazy Popper and those are standard unmodified times.

I have now managed to stretch times from 6 minutes to 12 with everything working right.

For a start, try 50g next time and you might stretch it to 7 minutes.

For any better than that you are going to have to make a few body modifications.

And as for a chimney, I had mine specially made at a muffler shop.

Talk about 25min roasts.... Yesterday i did 50g or PNG peaberry into 20sec of second crack and another 50g as soon as i heard 1 second crack. Each 50g took my crazy popper 23-25mins. I was scared that it was baking inside the popper! After that i did 100g of Mysore and 100g of Brazil rio minas and i stoped them at around 7-8mins just into 2nd crack.

As for the tins... I had that problem too i thought they just fit in perfectly until i knew that they all had to be cut somehow to squeeze it in.

    Re: First ever roast...

Decaf roasts a lot quicker due to the processes used to get the caffeine out of the beans.

Roast more...try 150 grams and see if that slows your roast down.

If the popper is already hot (from a previous roast) it is not hard to imagine that the next roast of exactly identical beans and mass will roast slightly faster. Poppers tend to roast a bit too quickly....I will be at the other end of the spectrum...once I have my rotisserie up and running...I think it will lag sorely....it will be able to do something like 500 grams....roast times at maybe 20 to 25 minutes?

started a topic First ever roast...

    First ever roast...

Okay the disclaimer here is that I roasted decaf beans...

And I dont have photos because ... hem... well... the battery ran out on the camera despite my husband reminding me every day last week to charge it *sheepish grin*

So I have a crazy popper and a tin can (emptied and clean) that doesnt quite fit (so some pliers cut and bent one end in). Plus 80g of decaf beans and 2 metal colanders.

I turned the popper on and the beans swirled really fast. After 3 1/2 minutes I heard what I think is the first crack (individual cracks like popcorn popping only higher pitched). Then after 5 1/2 minutes I heard what I think is the 2nd crack (a crinkling sound). Then 30 seconds later I turned the machine off and cooled the beans using the colanders. There was VERY little chaff. Is this because they are swiss water decaf. I read on another thread that someone has found wet processed beans have less chaff than dry processed?

The beans looked quite dark and dry. I waited 4 hours before I ground them (I couldnt wait any longer) and made a plunger. They tasted fairly inoffensive but maybe a bit burnt and sort of hollow tasting. Definitely lacking real body. I tasted them again today and they hadnt improved really. Im wondering if this is because they roasted too fast and burnt a little?

So Im wondering what to do to improve next time. How do I make the roast slower? Should I add more beans or less beans next time? Or is it because I used decaf beans.

And what damn cans do yall use as your chimney! Ive tried 3 different sorts and none of them fit neatly without being cut and bent in.

Last question... does doing two roasts in a row change the roast times or quality - ie if the popper is already hot?

    Cheers,

Meg (who needs a sleep cause shes only on decaf!)
