  • First Roast and an accidental blend (rough transport)

    I just received my starter pack at the door.

    Only downside is PNG Wahgi AA and Brazil Pulped Natural came undone and are now mixed in the bag.

    So I though for the first roast I'd do the blend, might as well as it's loose.

    It's probably not ideal but hey - what do you do?!

    Roasting in a 1200W popper from Myer. "Licorice" brand.

    I'll post pictures/video if people are interested.

    I got second crack in under 3 minutes (28 degrees and 1200W popper to blame?) waited a few seconds then pulled them out. Still came out pretty light.
    Any help would be much appreciated!

      Looks okay for a first roast. My one came out all black!

      Yours should be drinkable after a few days... but it may taste grassy/sourish.

      Some of your beans look okay whilst some looks quite light. Most likely to be caused by the accidental 'blend'. One origin may have reached first crack quicker than the other origin.

        Yeah, I'm hoping that's what it is. Actually, I'll go roast something elese now (single origin) and see if it makes a difference

          Hello again Aleanbean, Hey that is Fast even for 1200 watts and 28° ambient. I'm inclined to agree with specialpants that you heard two first cracks from the two different beans.

          As for the colours, I did a lighter than usual roast (for me) yesterday morning, which I stopped soon after first crack. It was single origin, but still had noticeable colour variations. This will often happen with a popper. It will usually start to even out a bit more as you get closer to second crack.

          On the plus side of uneven roasts, whether blends or SO's, you get some of the qualities of both light and dark roasts, and if you are lucky you may get the best of both. Some "blends" are the same beans roasted to two or three different levels then mixed together to get a better result than any of them on their own.

          I would suggest that you leave the "accidental blend" greens until you have a few more roasts in the bag, or even until the weather cools down, so you can get a longer roast time, which may not be quite as uneven.

            Photo uploading failed several times - I even tried downsizing it to 3mb.

            Had coffee from the dark roast about half an hour after roasting (wanted to see if it was drinkable) it was okay but pretty acidic.

            ps - I'm not one of the "I taste hints of watermelon in my coffee" types

              Hi Aleanbean,

              I am new to roasting myself and have taken the same path as you with using a popper (900 watt from Target).. My first batch was 100gram of Ethiopia Guji Sidamo OCR which i roasted on boxing day. At about 3.30 first crack occurred, then 1 minute later I removed the beans from the popper as I was after a light roast. The colour was inconsistent however taste was pretty good (similar to you I don't taste berries, watermelon or whatever but I am able to identify if i like it). Second roast was the following day with the same beans. I roasted for a bit longer and they turned out rather dark and shiny however the colour was consistent. I thought I might have burnt them and considered just throwing them away however being new to filtered coffee i gave them a go (cant say that i liked), I then tried in a flat white (after a couple of days of degassing of course).. Pleasantly enjoyed. I have since done a couple of light roasts of Tanzania Blackburn Estate - Clouds of August. The last roast was done on a noticeably cooler day and unlike the rest of the roasts I have done it took 4 min to 1st crack.

              Here are a few tips that I have been given to try and am yet to try:
              - Roast with the popcorn maker tilted.
              - Have a fan blow air into the popper while roasting.
              - Roast less beans at a time (apparently this allows more air to escape).
              - As others have already suggested, roast in a cooler environment.

              I am interested to hear how you go and if you find something that extends the roast time.

              I am happy with how my roasts are turning out (I am sure someone who can taste the different flavours might not enjoy as much), I cant imagine how good they will taste when I manage to improve them or if possible perfect them .

                Hello something,
                There is an easy mod for the Target Popper, which is safe and will not touch or expose any of the electrical components if done correctly.

                On the front of the unit there is a decorative panel which just "pops" out if you slip a screwdriver or a blade under it and lever outwards.

                This will allow an external fan to blow directly onto the metal roast cylinder & fan housing.

                It is even more effective if you cut another hole in the back, so that the air can blow straight through.

                On the back there are two small rectangular slots near the top. Cut between them to make a single slot about 65 mm wide.
                Next cut vertically down from each side of the new slot for 90mm (but no more).
                Make a final horizontal cut across the bottom, to make rectangular hole about 90 mm high and about 65 mm wide.
                This is easy if you have a dremel moto-tool or similar, but can be done with a hacksaw blade.

                I have done some testing with various mods and this is the most effective for slowing things down & extending the times. You may have to turn off the fan after about 4 or 5 minutes to reach second crack. If it is cool you may also have to cover the holes.

                P.S. Instead of tilting the popper, be prepared to manually stir the beans briskly with a wooden chopstick or thin dowel for the first few minutes.

                  Hello Aleanbean, Probably not too dark unless they are also quite oily looking. Should be good for flat white or cappuccino. Dark roasts are also supposed to be at their best earlier than lighter ones.

                  I drink milk coffees most times, so I take most of my roasts to the start of second crack - quite dark, but not oily.

                      Thanks for the tips guys. I actually found my dark roast was nicer today but it's quite shiny.

                      I much preferred the lighter one - I just thought it had a more solid flavour to it. (the blend of Brazilian and PNG)

                      I did a really rough mod job to my popper, just cut out about a cementer all the way around. Works alright

                        Hey Leo / Aleanbean,

                        Well I pretty much made the suggested modifications (took off front face plate but instead of cutting out a 6.5cm x 9cm hole i cut out one to suite a 6cm 12 volt pc fan and screwed the fan which runs off a separate power supply on the back of the machine). I am now getting to an average of 5.30 min before first crack (average taken from 3 roasts).

                        I also prefer lighter roasts however I like the taste of my dark shiny roast in milk coffees. I am positive that they are not burnt.
