  • B&D Popper

OK, I scored a Black and Decker popper (rated 1200W).

Tried it on the starter pack beans, and first cracking heard after only 2:30 - 3:00.

Ive since read these units have pretty weak fan, and so may be roasting too quickly - is that the case? Is the crazy popper much better (ie longer roast times)?

My first mod might be to add a 12V PC fan to a tin-can type chimney in an attempt to suck more air out of the popper and help reduce the temperature - any thoughts?

    Re: B&D Popper

I dont know that a PC fan would be rated for the temperature in the chimney. Could be a catastrophic meltdown!

PS: a crazy thought occurs.... if the inbuilt fan is too weak, there may be much latent heat around the element.... were the additional fan on the chimney to survive...it may well suck through this unused heat, compounding the problem.

Hi forkboy - welcome to CoffeSnobs.

      I agree with Robusto....

      catastrophic meltdown! ..... big time!!!

If you are going to use an additional fan - use it to push cold air into the popper from under...

      or just use a Corretto

        forkboy,

you could always try the airpump/metal tube idea Ive been playing around with (Ive ditched it now and got a Cascade popper from the Warehouse, but it was an idea worth fooling around with if you already have the stuff):

Or have a look at this monster thread:

          hmm... yes - good point

          meltdown = bad

so a big fan blowing cooler air into the unit from above? (not directly in line of heat)

varanid - I dont have an airpump available

Not a good idea... you want to assist the airflow through the popper.... more air over the heating element..... element is cooler..... beans roast more slowly.

Forcing air in from above will trap the air near the element (working against the fan trying to blow air out).... less air through element... less bean agitation and higher element temperature..... most poppers have an over temp cut-out - which will probably operate

              Yes,

I have unstifled the airflow into my popper and additionally point my pedestal fan at the intake point so that whilst its blowing away the chaff its help to force more cool air in.

This does help slow the times a little.
