Thanks for all the feedback guys!

Unfortunately I have no access to another grinder as the Brevile was the start of my coffee journey

This morning I decided to take the grinder apart again, gave it a good clean and low and behold, perfect coffee! Well after 4 shots to dial in! All I can assume is that some grains must of lodged in the grinder so I couldn't fully tighten after cleaning it last. Very weird as I've not had any problems before and always clean it between beans!

Ho hum, lesson learned! I guess I won't need that shim kit after all.

    Thanks once again guys

You did but I had no information to agree or disagee with that opinion and was suggesting another variable to play with.

Now I know you've already explored this variable.

Any chance you can try another grinder?

    Hi Mick
Yeah, often that's where you'll notice under-roasted beans - they will just disappear when you add milk ;-)
But certainly the shim kit will give you a bit more leeway to try some lighter roasts - as long as you don't loose the coarser end of the range in the process!
    Good luck!

Ah it's always a learning process Matt!

Funnily enough the 15 sec shot didn't taste too bad! No bitterness but just not strong enough in the mouth and completely lost once I added milk!

I was aiming for CS9 as I reckon the last roast was 10/11 rather than bordering on 10 and did not taste that great! I've ordered the shims from Breville today so I can see if the beans improve with age whilst I'm waiting anyways

    Hi Eaglemick
Often the darker the roast, the coarser you will need to grind to get a good shot (ie a CS10 you many need to coarsen up the grind from a CS9) and you might really need to wind up a CS8 to get a good, tight pour (and might find it too sour anyway as an espresso).

If you're used to bought browns (sometimes darker roasts depending on where you buy them) and you've been in the zone for a while with your grinder/machine on those, you may well have found the limit of the grinder settings, but only if you see a real reason to head down towards the CS8 range. Then it could be shim time. (personally i never roast to that level - just too sour in espresso for me)

But if you already like the taste/pour of your current setup with pre-roasted beans, then more than likely your grinder is happily grinding well for espresso in its current range - and it might be that your roasting technique may need to come to the party! I'd put this one down to experience - and try dial your roasting back towards the grinder zone - that way you're only dealing with one variable!

    It's all a learning process :-)

15 sec shot is not great

    Hear Hear, TG. Good advice.

Grind settings for the same bean can change radically with its post-roast age.

    You haven't mentioned dose amount.
If you can't go finer the only other way to slow down the pour is to up the dose.

started a topic Do I have a roast or grind problem?

Do I have a roast or grind problem?

    Hey Everyone!

I'm not sure if I have a roast or grinder problem so here goes!!

My setup is Behmor 1600, Breville Dual Boiler, Breville Smart Grinder.

I've had the Breville's for just over a year but the Behmor is a new addition, about 10 roasts in now!

I've had no issues with grind on separate roasts of the Ethopia Ghimbi and Peru Ceja De Selva but I think I took them both a tad too far into CS10. I've just roasted a new batch of both to CS8 and combined them to try as a blend. However when I try to grind them I can't get them fine enough for a decent pour. I'm currently down to the finest setting and only getting 3/4 on the pressure gage. Tamp and dose are both fine.

Only difference between the separate vs combined beans is roast depth and age. Separate were 6/7 days old but I've run out so I'm using the combined at 2 days old!

Would this make a difference? Do I have to let the beans rest longer or shoudl I get a shim kit for the grinder?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Mick
