Re: Roasting Logbook / Diary / Database

I log just about all the info that was mentioned and one more item....

I chew a few of the beans indvidually. Belive it or not, I have developed a crunch feel now and am beginning to tell the degree of roast and flavor from that. Wonder if the SCAA will and that to their cupping form

One question (cant find anywhere on this site to ask this), where the heck can I get some Peru Segunda from. I received the newbies pack and have been on fire with single and mixed roasts (Sunbeam Popper), and all have turned out fine, but wow, one bean roasted as a single tastes like burnt rubber "yuk" (Brazil Reo Minas)

I dont favour the Peru Segunda, like a stronger coffee, but wow, my wife loved it and we are running low of the Peru now, so if anyone has a place here in Aus that I can buy green beans of this from, "PLEASE" help me.

    Cheers
Probably best if this question is in the Wishing Well or General section. probably get more appropriate exposure there.
    cheers

That data base is good, have added a few things I saw in this forum which made sense, and now Im keeping my own data base, not past date bits of paper from our desk calender ;D

Re: Roasting Logbook / Diary / Database

I developed my own db using Filemaker Pro based on the coffee roasting db but modified to include the stuff I wanted. I find FmPro easier to use than Access based stuff because I can modify on the fly so can add fields if something new comes up.

I have it all scribbled in a book for the moment. But I am considering writing my own perl program. That way I can have it the way I want. Im sure there are some IT people here who could knock up some pretty fancy programs for this type of thing quite easily.

I have also started storing receipes/blends on my Palm. I got the software free from http://www.ineedcoffee.com/04/palm/ . Its pretty primitive but it does what it is supposed to. Also has useful stuff like recording when you last did a full clean etc... But I don t really understand what the Shopping List feature does.

Are there any Published Coffee Roasting book / diaries?

Just use a standard A4 size General Ledger style exercise book with half a page of space allocated per bean. Works ok for me as I can drag the book outside with me when roasting as a ready reference..... Have got a memory like a sieve :-?

How do you all record this informaiton?

    1. Manually write it (Notepad and pen)
    2. PC spreadsheet (Excel etc)
    3. PC Database (MS access etc)
    4. PC Roasting Software
    5. Published Coffee Roasting book / diary
    6. Other Method

It will be interesting to see what is the most popular method of storing this information.
And if there is anybody that has already created something that is willing to share and prevent me from reinventing the wheel ping me an Email or PM.

Apart from those mentioned, I also have the following fields:

    Cooling time

Temp of 1st and 2nd crack. I datalog my roasts so dont need to record other temps, too hard anyway.

Roasting notes which enables me to note anything strange that happened, or anything I tried doing differently.

    Degassing method

Tasting date, ie, the time between roasting and tasting.

Roasting tips post tasting, in other words once I have tasted the finished roast, do I need to look at changing anything?

    Between different beans yes.

With the same bean, the Ambient temperature really affects the time/speed the bean takes to fget to first and second crack.

I only roast early mornong or in the evening when it cools down at the moment and I have noticed the change of humidity makes a difference too.

Its not a control thing, just a comparison tool between roasts of the same bean.

There is not that kind of control with a popper.

    Well,

Temperature logging certainly allows for even more finesse when trying to fine tune future roasts 8-).... Though Im not quite into that level of control, still prefer to go by sight, sound, smell and the occasional glance at an old stopwatch

    Yes mate,

That is it exactly . 2nd Crack usually starts off with a couple of very subtle and quiet snaps every few seconds and gradually builds up into a crescendo of continuous sound as you have described. Most of my roasts are pulled before 2nd Crack even starts, with some just to the start of 2nd Crack and a couple allowed to progress through into Rolling 2nd Crack.

After youve completed a few roasts, youll start to recognise the various stages of the roast almost by the appearance of the beans alone, and this is helpful for those roasts where you are trying to avoid even the first few snaps of 2nd Crack. I dont know whether youve found this site as yet, but Sweet Marias is an excellent Home Roasters Information Repository with heaps of very useful and practical info about most things to do with home roasting. If you havent already, Id recommend sitting back and having a good read throughout the site to become familiar with where all the information is located for future reference.

    Cheers Goodies,
    Mal.
