  • USB Logger 'Meter is not plugged in'

I have been using the metre for all my roasts, this all with the bead type Thermocouple

Today I tried using the roster with the twirling Cord version in a Corretto.

However when trying to monitor from the pc, I get error message in CS app saying meter is not plugged in?

Right so this issue has to do with light... As soon as I cover the plug from USB into the metre it works. Seems that the light outside is causing an issue

Have you read the User Guide that Andy has put together here...

Pretty well every issue has a solution...

        Hi Mal,

I have read that thread, as well as the whole guide.

The issue that i was/am having is not described in either.

          No worries mate...

If you want to get some genuine help from experienced users though, you will have to provide detailed information about your hardware, software, O/S currency and any other info that may help. Not saying that I can help any but there's bound to be someone here who can...

          Mal.

            You answered your own question.

The connection between the meter and the cable is an IR optical one. If you let IR light in there it will cause an error. It will work fine inside under electric light, not in sunshine though.

Put some electrical tape around the plug and it should be fine.

Thanks Andy will give that a go tomorrow.

My workaround for today was as below.

I think a strip of electrical tape around the slightly opaque optical plug will achieve the same result.

I have 2 meters running on my commercial roaster in a south facing window and have never seen the problem and out of 100's of meters we have shipped over the years have not heard of this before but I would also assume most people are not roasting in the sun.

You could get some IR leakage from the roasters and heatguns too that would add to the potential of a data misread.

FYI, the meter uses an optical connection so you don't run the risk of cooking your PC with potentially large voltages in the meter. Of course reading temperature is zero volts but you could use the software to monitor 240v and that wouldn't be pretty feeding back through your USB cable!

I tried wrapping the plug in self-vulcanising rubber tape and it made no difference

It is nice and sunny in Brisbane today but this is sitting under a sun shade, not in direct sunlight

Cupping my hands over the top of the meter or adding a tinfoil hat and it works fine

                    Interestingly odd!
Nice job on the vulcanising tape too... very neat.

So is it the base of the connection that's letting light in?
Doesn't look like its the LCD from the tin foil hat.

It sounds like it's the light that is filtering through the plastic of the female side of the plug/top of the meter, most likely in conjunction with light leaking in via the gap between the top of the meter and the block of the female side of the plug. Depending on how big that gap is it could even be the main culprit.

I removed the meter from the protective elastomeric boot to get a better look at the protruding block on the female side of the plug.

Covering the larger side of the block with black insulation tape, as shown in the first photo... no joy

Covering the entire protruding block, as shown in the second photo... success!

I can't say I'm happy with this as a solution, an ugly work-around for something that should work out-of-the-box

Happy to see you got it working ok.

...but it does work out of the box.

I'll make the suggestion to the factory that they include a sticker that says "indoor use only"
                              ;-)
...and I'll also let them know about this thread.

                              Happy roasting.
