as long as you are taking it out of the box by moonlight...

I'm really frustrated by things that don't quite work properly, thank god I'm not a software Engineer

Opening the case revealed a potential cause of sensitivity to ambient light (see photo one)

Hopefully this fixes it properly (see photo two). I won't get a chance to test this in daylight until Friday, will post an update then

ggoosen, I would love to know if yours is the same

Lol was the ir led out of the holder?

I'm curious would you have been able to see that the led was out of position by looking down the socket hole? (ie without having to open the meter up?)

Also just for clarity. I think this package is awesome. I looked on the net and the price point is less than half of any other devices I found

Yeah I laughed too, that's exactly how I found it when I pulled the back off

When you know what it should look like, you can tell if it is out of position. The top of the LED is now about 2mm below the bottom of the socket

I agree, they are a great little meter, not bad value at all

FYI and for the Info of the supplier. this was not directly in the sun, i was roasting under a roof, outside. So no direct light. but the ambient light seemed strong enough to cause the issue.

Maybe they have changed something recently?

Yeah, i ordered one last week and have sent it back to Andy as i had issues with it.
It would work most of the time indoors, then i take a step outside (there was a 30cm area where it would fail every time) and it would stop. Then it failed inside too.
I roast outside, so needs to work outside for me.
I too opened it up and played with the led, but could not get it to work.
            Is it a new batch?
Great thing when it worked, super frustrating when it doesn't, cause it is so good

              What sort of "roof"?
I'm guessing some sort of clear or opaque verandah... that lets IR through!

              That makes 3 now.

I'm not sure why we have 3 out of 100's not working but I'm sure we will find a pattern.

Yep , that's right. It is opaque.

Another roast this evening and I found that pushing the led into the hole in the base of the connector made things worse. Not working reliably at night, that was unexpected

Here is a photo of my next attempt at making the data transfer work in daylight. I put the led back where I found it and wrapped a little black insulation tape around it and the base of the connector

Will see if this does the trick on Friday when I am home while the sun is up

I had the same issue ("Meter not connected" msg), but it turned out to be simply windows updating in the background. A restart fixed everything.

Same issue here guys. I purchased the meter around October and the LED is a good 10-15mm from the hole in the connector. Four roasts were fine, fifth one today was without data for most of it. Will try pushing it back in and covering it with tape.

Anyone had any luck with this since the last post?

That certainly needs to just be put back in.
For me, I found that I can't roast on a table make of glass. If I roast on a wooden table in is fine most of the time.
