  • Do CS data loggers work with Roast Logger software (I use Linux)

Can't find the answer to this after much searching.

I want to use the Roast Logger software rather than the CS Roast Monitor software, solely because I only use Linux Mint on my notebook. Roast Logger works under Linux and will use the output from a Victor 86B or 86C. As far as I can tell from posts on here the CS data logger is a Victor 86B BUT I read somewhere on here that Andy special orders these and they are different from the standard Victor. A CS'er from America had bought a Victor from Ebay and it would not run the CS software.

Roast Logger was put together by GreenBean at TooMuchCoffee.com See http://homepage.ntlworld.com/green_b...oastlogger.htm for details.

Hence, does anyone know if Roast Logger can use the CS data logger output?

Hi, have a look in the "Home Roasting" forum. There is a topic on Linux roasting software there. Just needs python installed, and certainly works on the Victor 86 multimeter.

That may not answer your question, but If you look at Andrew Tridgell's write up, and the source code, you may be able to get it to work.

    Good luck

Thanks Russell, yep I've downloaded that program as well.

My main concern is whether to buy the data logger from Andy or elsewhere, but of course I would rather give the business to Andy! I really would also rather use Roast Monitor as there are so many people on here who use it, but failing that Roast Logger looks pretty good and and the python software looks good too.

I can program in both Python and Java but am rusty in each. I don't think the source code would be included with the java programs. Might be best to just use the existing software.

I suppose I could just buy the CS data logger, give it a try and sell it again if it does not work.

Just cleaned up an old laptop to go on PIF and tested it with RoastLogger and Andy's meter (on XP) and it works fine.

Fantastic! Thanks very much for doing that experiment for me Gary, now I can buy one from Andy with confidence.

Did my first Corretto roast yesterday with no DMM but figured it couldn't be any worse than I would do with a popper. I was a bit heavy handed with the heat gun, RFC 11:15 to 12:45 and SC at 15:30. I didn't hear the start of SC and it was rolling before I dumped. The ambient was 28 degrees so my popper would have been around the 5 minute mark so I was pretty happy anyway. It was a beautiful even roast though the Peru Ceja de Selva usually is in the popper too. Cupped it 2 hours later and I think it's going to be more than drinkable. :0

          Thanks again for the info.

            An update:

I bought the CS data logger and it is working well with the Roast Logger software. I did have it stop in the middle of my first roast but I think that was a Roast Logger glitch because the probe actually fell out of my Corretto ( got to figure out how to stop that from happening again!) and after quickly dropping a few degrees a message popped up that feed from the DMM had stopped. After inserting the probe and restarting output, all was well in terms of logging but my roast had got away on me to the high side. I _think_ I recovered from that and only finished about 2 minutes early. I was trying to follow the profile set up by DesigningbyCoffee, and in my panic I increased heat quite a bit when I saw the temp dropping in the probeless state. Anyway the beans looked OK at the end. I'll know in 4 days

Main point though, the CS data logger works well under Linux with the Roast Logger software, at least for me in my set up.
