Re: size of roast effects on Gene Cafe roast tim
ok... had a weak moment today... passing by Sibonis in Pymble... walked out with a GC and some complementary beans (thx Dean).
so... pulled out 300g Ethiopia Lima... set the GC at 235c for 16min, for no particular reason... ended up kicking off the cooling cycle at a little over 15mins as they were giving off plenty of smoke and looking about right... by the time the cool cycle was complete Im thinking that they might be a little over done... but will wait and see the result in a couple of days.
Seems we have a spread of data pertaining to GC roasting results across a few threads ... maybe it would be useful if we could consolidate this into one place? Thoughts?

Re: size of roast effects on Gene Cafe roast tim
I did a 300 gm roast of the Budja MTC on Sunday....I went for 16 mins @ 230 degrees. They are slightly darker than I would have liked, but the smell is amazing!. I cupped them today and the taste is very smooth.
I was a bit concerned that the dark roast may have been a little bit too strong, but it seems to suit this bean.

Re: size of roast effects on Gene Cafe roast
yea I have found the same that larger amounts actually roast faster. I suppose that when there are more beans there are more in the hot air column. still roasts just as evenly though.

Re: size of roast effects on Gene Cafe roast
LAst night I tried 300g of PNG. Previously I had done 200g for 17min at 230C and the roast was great.
With 300g in I pulled them at 16 min and probably should have pulled them at 15min. The beans are a dark chocolate colour with a light sheen of oil. It all seemed to accelerate towards the end possibly because of the extra bean mass.

Re: size of roast effects on Gene Cafe roast tim
After 100s and 100s of roasts we have never done one that wasnt 300g!
The initial weight of beans is one variable we never think about or tweek.

Re: size of roast effects on Gene Cafe roast tim
Hi Herbie!
I did a 300gm roast in my GC and it handled them very well. I am sure that the GC can handle a 300gm roast all of the time, and this is coming from those CSrs who have one aswell.
I would gather that different beans would require longer/shorter time variations.
With the cracks on mine, I roasted EY and found I could hear them through the chaff collector quite easily.

Re: size of roast effects on Gene Cafe roast tim
Hi Herbie,
At the Valentines Day Roasting evening at Sibonis in Sydney, Serge explained that the chaff collector acted as an amplifier for the cracks...that is the best place to hear them... so if you cant hear the cracks with the chaff collector removed you could try reconnecting it.
300gm was roasted on the night and the Gene Cafe handled it easily.
Hope this helps,
Paolo.

size of roast effects on Gene Cafe roast tim
:
I have just completed my first few roasts on my new Gene Cafe and I am very happy with the results even though I have not been able to hear the cracks very well (even with the chaff collector off).
So far using 200 grams at 225deg for 18 minutes (16-16 1/2 for decaf) gives excellent flavour and is (as far as I can tell from Sweet Marias pictorial roast guide) a City + to Full City +roast.
Beans I have tried are:-Sumatra Mandehling
Bali Gunung Agung
Rawanda Cyangugu
African Red Sea Blend
Guaetamala SHB S/W Decaf
Has any fellow c/s an idea of how much increasing the roast size to 250 or 300 grams will affect the roast time?
Thanks Herbie.Tags: None
