  • LONG POPPER TIMES - PERU VILLA RICA GRACE ESTATE

Ok..unmodded Crazy Popper. I have posted my long roast times before.

I did a 110 gram batch of the Grace Estate this AM. Ambient temp is 21.5 degrees C.

Time for first crack was 3.5 mins - long rolling first crack, very load to about 6 mins and then second crack commenced subtly at 16 mins 45 seconds and I left the second to 17 mins neat - so 15 mins into second crack(le). Nice roast - no oil on the beans. Lots of chaf has come off. The roast is exceptionally even. Using only 110 grams with a small chimney (about 5 inches) means that beans move around a lot and get evenly roasted. Chaf comes off well and you dont lose more than 1-3 beans (ie basically no waste) generally out the top.

It seems to me that quick to the first and then such a lag to the second must be good for the roast, but I would be grateful for feedback.

    Cheers

My Crazy popper would routinely give me roasts in the 15-18 min time frame. They always looked good, but the corretto method has seen a huge improvement in taste. I gave up the popper due to the less than great results in the cup and went back to Merlo. Im hoping the corretto roasting will keep me away from Merlo for the forseeable future.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

      ozscott,

Yep I have found a longer roast between first and second cracks does improve the flavour in the cup - more so with some varieties of bean than with others....

But because the popper is so ambient temperature dependent, it is much harder to extend the time reliably than it is with the Corretto..... and I agree with Mark - the taste of a Corretto roast is superior to a popper roast even when you do manage to get a long FC to SC period.

        ozscott,

When I managed to extend my Crazy Popper times (with mods) to what you are getting, my professional roaster friend told me I should be trying to get a gap of about 6 minutes between FC and SC.
I didnt think I could reduce the gap easily, hence my moving on to a HG and bowl.

The point of not going too long over 6 minutes was to avoid baking the beans.

Sounds like the roast stalled for a bit. The gap is a bit too big between 1C and 2C.

Up the batch size just a smidge to bring the gap down.

thanks Nunu et al - will try to bring batch size up. I will probably look for a heat gun too.

            Cheers again
