Re: First Heatgun Roast - Colombia Volcan Galeras!
I have yet to taste it but it is odd that it smells different to the same beans done in the popcorn maker - my better arf noticed that also.

Re: First Heatgun Roast - Colombia Volcan Galeras!
Thanks for that JavaB - will test in a few days and post back. I love how much can be done evenly and quickly with the heat gun. I might break out the bread maker that sits in the cupboard and crank it up!

Re: First Heatgun Roast - Colombia Volcan Galeras!
About 12 minutes for the start of FC is what I aim for.... but it usually only lasts about 1-2 minutes.. reducing the heat as FC gets under way...... and generally pull the roast at 18-20 minutes (depends a bit on bean variety and the quantity....) just at the start of, or slightly into SC.Originally posted by ozscott link=1180490929/0#4 date=1180501189Thats JavaB - I will speed up the second a bit...does the first sound a bit slow?
I think you will find the 30 minute roast really nice..... but if you reduce the heat too much to extend the time between cracks too far.... you risk a change in characteristics (not quite as good in the cup) so Ive found 18-20 minutes to be the best compromise.

Re: First Heatgun Roast - Colombia Volcan Galeras!
Mmmm 15 minutes between FC and SC does seem a bit long.
I generally aim for about 6 minutes. The flavour really does develop between FC and SC so it should taste great - the only thing to watch is stalling the roast totally - where the temperature of the beans goes backwards - and that can damage the flavour to some extent....
Well done, wait a couple or three days and you will be able to enjoy the results.

Re: First Heatgun Roast - Colombia Volcan Galeras!
Cheers matey...my second crack took 15 mins from the end of the first crack - ie the roast was 30 mins all up...have I taken too long to achieve the second?

Re: First Heatgun Roast - Colombia Volcan Galeras!
Well done mate...
Try extend to gap between 1st and 2nd crack... so if 1st crack happens at 12mins, then "stall" the roast (youll need a TC to monitor the beans temp - holding it at about 205-210deg, and at say 14-15mins, ramp the temp up to 230deg approx and bring on 2nd crack ;-), pulling the roast in the 16-19min area... this way you ensure the beans are well roasted in the heart of the bean :-)
This is a general guide...

First Heatgun Roast - Colombia Volcan Galeras!!!
Thanks JavaB for your assistance with this!
Ok...variable speed Ryobi and elcheapo stainless bowl from Spotlight.
Set up HG on my bottling thingo that I use for home brewing and put on a clamp. Put the HG end about 9-10cm away from 400grams of beans. Put it at 650 degrees C and high fan (high fan and same position for whole roast).
First crack seemed to take a long time - started about 12 mins ended about 15 mins...all going uninform colour. I turned down the gun in the middle of the first crack to 500 degrees and then up to a bit more (about 550) - total for about 1 minute or 2 into second crack (to make sure they were all hot enough for the second) was 30 mins. So about 15 mins for second crack.
The roast looks really good and even, with no signs of burning.
Weight loss was 70 grams.
I am hooked....thanks again.
