Re: Ethiopian Sidamo Grade 1
I found yirgacheffe behaves much the same way as the sidamo., it colours up very quickly which is no reflection on the flavour you are looking for (aside from burnt).
I havent roasted a batch yet but looking forward to it.

Thought it looked a bit too whiz-bang for a home set up! Looks like alot fun though.

Re: Ethiopian Sidamo Grade 1
Wushoes - thats an incredibly useful thing to post! If you were here Id buy you a beer!
I keep wondering how beans are "supposed" to look while roasting. I guess Ive only done about 20 or so roasts so far, and am still trying to get the hang of it.
The sidamo is drinking rather nicely already
From the piccies (which I appreciate arent accurate) Id say my sidamo roast is about the same colour. Darn, I wish my card was here!!
Question: (please note that all I have is a popper to roast with) What "profile" should I be aiming for with these? I seem to be getting FC at 6-8mins (start) and 7-10mins (end) with SC starting 12-18mins. So this gives me 6(ish) minutes between first and second crack. Does that sound "reasonable"? I could accelerate the roast by re-cycling some of the hot popper exhaust into the inlet, but thatd be about the limit of "tweaking", I think.

Roast pictorial.
Notes: Roast did not end at 9 minutes......I forgot to time it (silly me!!!!), and the times on the photos were taken from the digital image properties.

Re: Ethiopian Sidamo Grade 1
Roasted up a 600 gram batch today....not too light...wanted to keep some of the characteristics there.
Ill see how it goes over the next week...a touch over 500 grams...:S
If I was to hazard a guess on the CS card....probably right under the "OB" of snobs...maybe even a touch lighter.
The photo isnt really representative of the roast colour as always...the flash wreaks havoc...theyre actually quite dull........and no colours on the CS card even come close to matching the colour of the beans.

Re: Ethiopian Sidamo Grade 1
Hi Kevin,
I think they are a beautiful looking bean, there is another thread going in the cupping area talking about taste.
They are definitely getting better with age.
I am going to roast some more on the weekend and take them into rolling second crack and see how they compare.
The darkness scared me a bit, but they are a strong bean!
Look forward to reading your tasting notes.

Re: Ethiopian Sidamo Grade 1
I just did 115g in my popper today. Same experience - but it was only 9C in the mower shed
The chaff was a bit weird, wasnt it! The beans certainly colour at a rate of knots. Dont have a card (yet) but I roasted them about 20 seconds into second crack (based on the advice in some other threads on Sidamo). They are pretty dark for the timing - but not excessively so.
The beans seem to be more active in the popper than any other ones Ive roasted so far. Tipping the popper slightly caused some to fly out. Never had that happen before.
Curiously, I did these more-or-less straight after a batch of the Sulawesi Torajah Kalosi, and those were a bit uneven looking but the Ethiopians were beautifully uniform. I thought it might be the other way around..

Ethiopian Sidamo Grade 1
Roasted some of these tonight.
Great looking bean, few interesting points:
1. It is bloo*y freezing in Melbourne today so wondered how that would all go given it was 12 in the shed. No noticeable difference.
2. Chaff didnt start to blow in great abundance until they hit first crack, found that unusual, normally get a fairly even distribution through to end of first crack, didnt really start until first crack which was around 8 minutes. (18% weight loss)
3. Once they hit first crack darkened in a hurry and went to about a 9 on CS card.
4. First snaps of second crack at 13 and pulled them at 13 50 seconds before start of rolling second crack.
5. They are a 10 on CS card. I am used to beans going well into rolling second crack to get this dark so will be very interested to taste them.
Anybody else roasted or tasted any yet?Tags: None
