Noobie looking for a popper and some organic green beans

Hey guys ! love the forum here.

Im a noobie looking to get into roasting at home in small amounts. I would like to roast organic green beans into a very light roast, then grind them up.

I have a few questions.

Which are the best poppers in australia, and where can i get them?

Where can i order 10-20kg of organic green beans for the cheapest. Local or overseas?

What type of grinder will i need to grind a very light roast?

I don't know about cheap, its a bit like cooking, you want the best, freshest ingredient's possible. And you can get your greens here, Im sure Andy would love to help you out.

Hi there blackfox, welcome along.

Light roast + popper is going to be a struggle. Part of the goal of roasting coffee is to allow the inside of the bean to 'develop' as much as the outside of the bean. Think to when you might've experience a muffin not properly cooked in the middle - it's likely that the outside got too brown before the inside could properly cook. What that means is you need fairly tightly controlled heat to make sure you're getting good transfer into the bean, across a suitable length of time for it to penetrate, while not overdoing the outside.

The challenge with the popper is that it's like putting muffins into a 250 degree oven. Dang hard to make them cook evenly. And as a result, you might need to go darker than you desire to ensure the end product is palatable.

Poppers tend to put out much too much heat for their coffee bean capacity. You need to get a low powered popper relative to your context. What you want to look for in these threads (and do use the search box) is the discussions around wattage of poppers, and also discussions around ambient temperature in various places, as the popper is fairly exposed to the elements. Often the threads will be referring to poppers no longer on the market, which will be frustrating. Op shops or gumtree/ebay are your best bet. Even then you might be waiting a while.

I ended up going for an Aldi (Lumina) popper. It was too powerful for Autumn use in Sydney, so I moved on to another solution.

Paul, I'm not sure Andy offers starter kits anymore, does he?

Regarding organic beans - probably a bunch that Andy offers are organic, but an organic bean that won't feel brutalised by a popper and might reap some lovely rewards is the Mexico El Malinal Typica. It's quite delicious.

Im not looking to buy any expensive equipment i just want to have a play around for starters.

I have looked on gumtree, and i have found tiffany poppers for 5$ + postage. Also there are some breville crazy poppers for around 15$

I did a good search here and read alot. Seems like lower watt is best. But im not sure what the general consensus on poppers is today. Is there anything out there thats good that i can buy new?

So far i have found

Black and decker: 5$ + postage

Sunbeam Cornelious: 5$ + postage

Kambrook: 5$ + postage

Breville: $10 + postage

Tiffany (found 3 of these) : $10 + postage

Looking to buy one of these asap. Read scattered reports across here. Some people claimed a cheap target one was awsome, others said it was crap.

Welcome and I hope your roasting journey takes flight very soon.. My suggestion is that if you are looking to buy 10-20kg of green beans, which as a conservative estimate can cost you approx $120 - $250 (not organic), you're much better off investing that money into a roaster than can deliver consistency and control over the roast.

You may be too late but check this CS members roaster for sale for $160. Many users on the forum so you'd have plenty of guidance. He is also offering a decent quantity of green beans to get you started. If you learn on a quality starter setup you'll be much happier with the results and inclined to continue with it.

Im looking to make Golden light roast (almost peanutty smell) aswell and medium roast.

I would like to buy certified organic and fairtrade beans.

I have done a search and this is what i have found

Hi BF,If you have $1000 avaliable don't muck around get a Behmor roaster from Andy and a macap m2m or compac K3 grinder from site sponsors. The roaster comes with 2.5 kg of beans, so you can have a play immediately. chippy

Yeah so you're never gonna get a good product from a popper if your goal is to roast like that. Well you can, but by the time you're done modifying it it certainly won't be a popper anymore. I second chippy, if this is really your goal, you'll need something built for roasting.

Chippy, I don't know that an M2M or K3 could hack grind that light, could it?

hi readeral, I have an m2m and it grinds pretty fine, but not sure. Really I was just making a suggestion of a good roaster and a cheapish, for the quality, grinder that is above appliance quality and could be purchased within the budget. chippy

The breville grinders aren't that great for light roasts. I have found that the safety clutch kicks in quite a bit.

I'm aware of this practice and now it all makes sense why organic is the choice of bean for this operation.
Really no point investing further than a popper if this is the reason, unless a larger batch at a time is necesary, but even then...
