  • CS card numbers and roast names.

    Hi all

    Ok I have read the thread on the meber cards and why there is no comparision of CS Card numbers with names for roasts but I still want a comparison :-) I have been looking at various web sites and their pictures and comparing to the CS cards. Yes there is no set nomenclature for roast names but what I want to do is a simple roast log and have two scales:
    Roast style: Light -- Medium -- Dark/City -- Full City -- Light French -- French (or whatever)
    CS Card No.: 1 2 3 -- 4 5 -- 6 7 8 -- 9 10 -- 11 12 --

    When I do a roast I circle a number and it helps me to see what the rough roast name is also.
    I havent even settled yet on a roast style name list as there is so much variation.

    My question is
    1. what roast names do CS folks use? Most roast sites are american, do we use different names.
    2. what rough mapping would the numbers match with e.g full city roast = numers 9,10 ?

    just use the coffee snobs card system. the city+ system is a bit : not very descriptive and everything is city something, you may as well just say my roast is - + full or average. I havnt seen it anywhere exept for sweet Marias and on forums so I dont know how widely used it really is.

      Ive never gotten into the City, Full City thing.
      Nor, the French, Vienna, Italian.

      I just use the number on the CS card now.
      EG: A 9 on the CS card = A 9 on the CS card, and so on.

        I dont get the city roast thing either, honestly what city are they reffering to????

        It doesnt go anywhere to really describe the roast, and might I ssay a tad pretentious.

        The Australian method, although not perfect is far more simple

        eg single (light)  3/4 (medium)  double (dark)

        There is nothing  wrong with keeping it simple and for our purposes using the card method.

          The card has been made up precisely so we dont have to rely on 100 different peoples interpretation of what a light, or city, or italian roast looks like.

          Keep it simple, keep it understandable, keep it easily communicated. Use the card with numbers.

            I did some searching on Google using some more specific terms and see that some places refer to roasts as light/medium/dark but whats the single, 3/4 & double mean?
            Google brings up lots of things about single or double shots instead.

              Hi all

              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_Roasting classifies roasts into 4 classes then "Aliases" within that. "Aliases" seems an excellent work given that theterms vary so much.

                Agree with Java,

                Why look for additional ways to complicate something, when the CS Card has it denominated right there in front of you? Sure, if you want to converse with non-CS members about a degree of roast you can use anything you like, but Id try and talk em into becoming members so that they can get their own cards

                    Now all we need is a number printed on each roast on the cards so we can see at a glance what colour were on about and well really have a simple system that works for all! :

                      Hey Im only a newbie but heres my 2 cents.

                      This CS card system looks simple and great.

                      Instead of referring to the vague foreign systems that appear to be in existence already, this is the opportunity for all (members here at least) to adopt a fresh new system that is straightforward and uncomplicated, in typical Aussie style.

                      Who knows? If it becomes popular in the future the CS card system may become a de-facto reference standard!

                      As there are only a dozen variations, in my opinion, numbers are totally unnecessary as most people can count from 1 to 12 without too much trouble I hope.

                      I already like the idea of referring to beans as CS5, CS9, etc.

                      You know it makes sense!

                          So my Pullman tamper will have numbers engraved next to each ring so I dont have to count? :P :P

                              easier to refer to " roasted it to a 10, instead of "...to a 3rd from the right"...
