You know what? Im just wrapt that I have my card and that we have a method of communicating which ensures consistency. In addition it cost me absolutely nothing and I dont remember the last time I received something for nothing..

It sits proudly in my wallet to be used at any time a reference is required or for use before the secret handshake  8-).

Thanks Andy for once again going above and beyond for CSers..

Yep, I love mine too and it gets used! I had made up a template of Sweet Marias guide that I used but it grated me using terms like city whatever. And the grading wasnt as clear as the CS card.

This is so much simpler and also gives us a good "universal" benchmark.

As for the number thing, I like the uncluttered look

my "3rd from the right" reply was very tongue in cheek.

Its perhaps sounding a bigger issue than I see it as a result of reinforcement of the same points and a bit of soapboxing! I agree its not hard to count it out each time; all Im saying is that to me a number system seemed a logical thing to have on the cards and I was surprised there werent any overwhelmingly powerful reasons against it. But the decisions not gone that way, I can live with that and as I mentioned earlier in this thread Im happy to go with whatever the majority prefer.

Yeah remember that but the reasoning didnt really sound that solid to me and still doesnt. Sure we can all count to 12, me included, but why make it harder than necessary? Numbers just make it so simple to quickly refer to each colour. Guess its why Pantone et al use numbers rather than just names...
Hardly a fair comparison as Pantone consists of thousands of colors on a hundred or so different cards rather than 12 colors on a single card. Personally I think a mountain is being made of a molehill here given that it would only take a fraction of a second more to count than to read a number.

Well I guess if its that big an issue for some people, you can always do as is suggested above, write your own numbers on the card to suit yourself.... Personally, I like my card to be uncluttered and am quite happy to use my fingers (and ears if I ever happen to roast a batch that dark :P)

Take the dont make it easier even though we can argument a step further, and instead of photos just have descriptions: 7 = cadbury milk chocolate. 9=dark brown boot polish, 11 = Old Gold chocolate. The quote above could easily have read "the final had no pictures because we thought most people know what colour all those items are". Why not make things as simple as possible given the choice is there?

Anyway someone else brought it up here so I thought Id jump on my soapbox briefly. Its safely packed away now though.

i am with you, Greg... numbers!!
easier to refer to " roasted  it to a 10, instead of "...to a 3rd from the right"...

I guess it must just be me but I would never have thought about referring "...to a 3rd from the right".
I would have just called it CS10 in the first instance.
My impression was that you would just imagine it says 1-12 on the card, but I guess not everyone sees it that way.

I guess if its really an issue, you can always customise your own card, ie., mark it 1 to 12.

If you peruse the original thread dealing with these cards (http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1179756431/9#9) youll see the question of having numbers on the cards was addressed early on:

The card has 12 panels from green to brown. The early prototypes had numbers on them, the following ones had just "1" on the left and "12" on the right.... the final had none because we thought most people can count to a dozen using all their fingers and ears (Is Chopper Read a CoffeeSnob?)

Exactly. Why complicate things by having to count it out every time? :-/ : Anyway sounds like the decisions already been made...
