    No worries.
Make sure you check out Behmor roaster available right here on Coffeesnobs. I don't own one, but plenty of snobs do and from comments, are very happy with it.
Depending on how may people you are roasting for, the machines you mentioned may not be big enough. That's the reason I very quickly upgraded from the popper.

    Cheers

Hey Wynbrew....Great Post. Thanks for your reply. Hmmm... re switching on and off. This sounds really interesting. Its so hot here in Bendigo Central Vic....probs hitting 42 degrees on Monday. That might be a good idea. Ive only made just one batch "ever". So...whoop whoop....I sense an emerging obsession.

Is it true that it is best to avoid oil release from beans? All the you tuber US guys warn against taking it too far past second roast = oily beans.

My beans are Kenya AA. I have no idea which is better / best / bestest. Just thought I have liked Kenya Mocha at coffee shop in Bendigo .. so I went for the Kenyan.

My roasting time was only um...just over 5 minutes. Was really hot (as mentioned) outside...so maybs when weather cooler time may extend.

Re: proper roaster....as mentioned to Andy in this thread....keeping my eyes on the CoffeeFresh SR700. Sold through Amazon. Spoke to the developer / business owner (whatevs) and he advised that they working on converting US machine for international use. I think that is the the one I will purchase eventually.

The Ikawa (or something like that)...looks likes like a designer kitchen item ...very smart looking on the bench top....but lol the $$$$$$$$. No thanks. Taking orders now.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Hi Andy...

Thanks for your encouragement. What an amazing discovery. It wasn't all that hard to recognise the sound of First Crack and Second Crack.

Bonus : Great Cup of Coffee / Economical in the long run / Can play around with timings, diff beans etc.

Lots of discussion on web re: resting vs nah dont worry about resting. I guess that is for each of us to work out as we go. Thinking of making up a second batch tomorrow so it can sit for over a week and will be good comparison.

Any thoughts on home roasting machines like : Fresh Roast SR700 (US model that is being modified for international use) and that UK hipster crowd funded roasting machine...IKAWA. Have my eyes on the Fresh Roast Machine. Spoke to the maker...and they are rushing to release by September 2017

    Way to go Lisap!
Pop corn makers are an inexpensive way to have a "crack" at home roasting (pun very much intended)
Can get some very good results and an immediate realisation of the benefits of home roasting.

    Cheers

Interesting to hear your experience with popcorn popper roasting LisaP. I live in Tasmania and have been home roasting (Popcorn machine) for six months now. Have great results with Ethiopian beans, but just started some Columbian Volcan beans which were said to be easy roasting. However my first batch past first crack after 7-8 minutes, brewed up very bitter and harsh tasting even after 5-6 days resting now. I quickly looked into roasting notes for this coffee on the 'bean bay' and found others had same experience. The beans need to be taken slowly up to early second crack but without to much heat so they don't burn and start releasing the oils. Long story short - second batch tast far better - I use a Breville Duo Temp espresso machine. I control the roast temperature and time in Popcorn maker by switching machine on / off throughout roast. Example 22 seconds on - 38 seconds off (1 minute) and repeat this until the beans reach desired roast depth. Bring on a proper roaster one day.

Just started home roasting with a pop corn maker I picked up at gumtree. Wow!!!! Used the roasted beans at day two post roast - so probs room for improvement. Popper cost me $10.00 on EBay. Lots of instructions avail on web. Recognise first crack (pop corn popping sound) then second crack (rice bubble popping sound) pulled 20 seconds after second crack. Satin finish - no oil. Anybody use popcorn machines in Bendigo Central Vic?
Working...
