  • Recommendations for my first BeanBay order :)

    Hey CS home roasters,

Just doing my first "experiments" with roasting using a popper, but already keen to upgrade to something for roasting 150-250g at a time .... maybe a Behmor Plus - once I must up enough $.

About to put in an order on BeanBay. Apart from the Peru Ceja de Selva A, is there any other recommendations that will be easy to roast in a popper. I'm a milk based espresso coffee drinker. Prefer something full bodied on the slightly stronger side to cut through the milk and with enough crema to help me practice my latte art . Not really into sweet or acidic flavours or anything too funky that is going "dance on my tongue"

Any help and recommendations will be of great help with my roasting journey

    Thanks in advance!!!

You could try Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, one of my favourites.

Give the Aceh a go, I think it's excellent.

        Hi there,
the columbian supremo is probably a good one to try. That was in fact my first bean with a popper as well.

Brazil pulped is a great option, nice and easy to roast.

Just be aware with the Brazil pulped that it is a chaff monster. Nothing wrong with that, but it may surprise you just how much chaff it does produce.

I used to sit on my back deck with oven mitts, shaking my popper so that the beans wouldn't burn on the bottom. My kids loved the chaff. Like some sort of weird caffeinated snowflakes.

For what its worth, here's a list of an order I placed with Coffee Snobs yesterday.

                Brazil Pulped Natural
                Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Special Prep
                Ethiopia Limmu
                Uganda Kisoro AA
                ROBUSTA India Magundi Sundried
                Peru Ceja de Selva A
                Rwanda Nyungwe A
                Ethiopia Sidamo Ardi Naturals
My preference is for big bold chocolaty flavours, syrupy viscous mouth feel.

Yes, I prefer African and South American beans, I find SE Asian beans too earthy for my taste.

WOW, that is one massive list ... you obviously have one serious roaster at home!

With what I have left from my previous order should last me about 12 months.

I roast 725 grams at a time (green) in a Coretto.

The reason I posted the list was to give you an idea of the type of beans I am buying to suit my palate, thought it may help.

PS Placed the order a little after 7 PM yesterday, got an email just before 5 PM today advising the order was ready to ship.
As usual, brilliant service from Andy and his team.

Yep, Andy does a great job. My order is also on its way. I also order for work and the staff asked that I order more from Andy.

In the end I ordered 7.5kgs of green beans to try out:
                        Peru Ceja
                        Columbian Supremo
                        Brazil pulped

Can't wait to give them a go (and try different blends between them) .... this amount of beans will last me a while for sure!

Hope you enjoy your selection Jazzy, have roasted and enjoyed Colombian Supremo in the past, easy bean to roast, the batch I had (few years ago) produced lots of crema.

Columbian supremo is great, excellent aroma and taste, it's our favourite bean. We'll buy double or tripple the amount of supremo to anything else.

PNG coffee is also excellent, Ethiopian harrar roasted slightly darker in low quantities in a blend works for us too. El Salvador has some nice brews, man the world's your oyster, have at!

Order arrived intact a while ago, ordered Sunday 21st arrived 10.30 AM Thurs 25th, pretty good considering I'm out in the sticks about 160 km North of Adelaide.

Well done Coffee Snobs and Australia post.
