  • Need coffee advice!

    Hey everyone,
I need some advice on which coffee to use in a cafe Im opening. Im not a coffee drinker so I thought it would be best to ask coffee lovers what you would love to drink. So far I like 5 senses. Any suggestions would be good. And no, Im not looking for free advertising. Wont even mention the town its in! Cheers

Hi Caffoo and welcome to CS...

Its great to see that you want to serve quality coffee beans and you will no doubt get a whole heap of recommendations.

Now the tough question: If you dont drink coffee? Why open a cafe?. Is it simply that you have never had a truely great coffee?  :-?

Bottom line is that you can follow as many rules as you like but without tasting your product, you will never know for sure.

Are you sure that you want to head down this pathway when youre not interested in the hero product? Its like opening a garage when you dont have any interest in cars...

Think very carefully because if you get it wrong, you will lose money faster than you ever made it....

      Hey,
Thanks for the advice. And yes I think it is because Ive never had a great coffee. I will be sampling some suppliers coffees myself over the next few weeks, so the true test will be who can convert me!!! Then I know its great coffee. I just wanted to get some ideas of who I should be sampling

i like the coffee from atomica, it delivers to some cafes around melbourne, and though to be honest i havent tried it (i will very soon!) im sure you couldnt go wrong with veneziano.. five senses is in perth right? is that where the cafe is?

Five senses is also on the Mornington Peninsula I think. Veneziano estate is also a very nice blend.

5 senses is in Mornington. They roast on site. They are the best choice so far as all the other companies lack customer service. 5 senses deliver on a 24 hour schedul so you never have stale coffee sitting around. The others all seem to want you to buy in bulk and store it. Id prefer fresh coffee

Erh, I agree with Andy actually, get some samples off him!!! Support the smaller businesses rather than the giants.. thats usually how I work with my freelance stuff (even though that has nothing to do with coffee).. haha. :

Hi there Chafoo, and welcome to CS

Um, just wondering (and I dont mean to be rude here) if youve never had truly great coffee, then do you know how to make one :-?

I only ask as I always thought Melbourne cafes served great coffee... ;D
Until I became a coffeesnob. I now have a newfound appreciation for those 30/60mls of that little black syrup and how much effort and true passion goes into getting it to be truly great.

Many cafes use fresh coffee, but you wouldnt know it when you ask for an espresso.

                    Hey,
I do agree with your thought of needing to like coffee to be able to make a decent one....but I think the proper training and enough friends in the trial process will help me to create the best coffee. I know some great bartenders who dont drink!!!!

                      Re: Need coffee advice!

you will need to learn to enjoy a good short black. You could have the best technique and technical understanding on earth, but your espresso will not be consistently great until you can tune the parameters to taste.

great bartenders sample their cocktails before giving it out to their customers by putting a short straw in the drink and putting their finger over the top and then suck it in to make sure it tastes right.

I hope they put an extra drop or two to compensate!

I am going to come to Chafoos defense here. I go to a cafe here in Adelaide and the owner does not drink coffee as he cant. He makes great coffee and goes by sight and smell etc. He gets very good quality beans from a good roaster and has done quite a bit of training before the cafe was opened. He does a fantastic job and is very fussy about his product. i have seen him pour a shot down the sink because it wasnt right.
