  • Roast anything other than coffee beans?

Has anyone experimented with roasting, grinding, brewing and drinking anything other than coffee beans?  Eg I know you can roast soya beans for a caffeine free replacement to coffee beans. How about split peas, borlotti beans etc etc?

    Just interested..or shoot me down...

There are some recent threads on roasting cocoa beans. Getting them from roasted to edible chocolate sounds like a lot of work.

Not for drinking, but in the past, I have roasted peanuts in the shell. Buy them raw from the market, only took a short time in the oven from memory. Not much cheaper than buying the in shell product already roasted, but taste a lot nicer.

As for roasting soya beans as a caffeine free replacement to coffee beans... hmmm.. I wouldnt use the word replacement. Id say pretty poor substitute.

Well if you are into beer brewing you can also roast barley, wheat... etc.

Then obviously infuse it at the right temperatures to extract the goodness, and finally ferment it :-)

Malted (torrefied) grains are quite palatable on their own. Just like coffee.

Pumpkin seeds taste very nummy when roasted. Either plain, salted, or seasoned with any number of other spices including cayenne pepper.

Did that last night - Yummo, Porky pig found its way into the roasting chamber the night before.
