Re: Pls Help! GeneCafe suddenly doing weird roasts

I still think your temp is too low JB. I work both of my Genes pretty hard and found that after the initial mid 220s roasts, Im now up to 228 and will sometimes increase that to 232 post 1st crack just for that little extra push with some harder beans. Also, washed beans roast cleaner than dry hulled beans. I weigh my beans to the gram and always roast 300gm.

Check that the vents are clear- allowing air flow. I often blow some air through dry hulled stuff if Im roasting it alone to clean it up a little before I load the drum. In addition, I have been pre-heating to 150 deg and then stopping the roasterl loading rapidly and going from there. Even then, I typically roast for at least 19 and sometimes closer to 21 minutes.

Hello! JB the Gene Cafe doctor is just back from HK! If you have any problem please talk to me.

Definitely the best roast is about 250Gms and the temperature 228 to 232 maxi, 2mcm knows a lot about this roaster too.
If your Gene catch cold I will fix it.

PS. The cafe in Honk Kong is very bad I have a big job to teach them what is coffee!

        Hi Jazzy_boy!

        Just a couple of questions:

Did you buy these beans from the same place you buy your green beans from?
When you get your beans, are they in some sort of packaging?, that may have exposed them to moisture?

Wonder what happened to Jazzy? Were still trying to offer help and hes not keeping up! There should be a law...let people know how things worked out!

I was going to refer jazzy to the following thread - whilst his gene heats up within the parameters, I thought he might be interested to see the variations that occur from one gene to another in regard to time taken to achieve maximum temp.....

Re: Pls Help! GeneCafe suddenly doing weird roasts

I am having the exact same problem! My beans look identical to the pics in the first post. Had my Gene since Feb, never had this problem before, done everything thats been suggested, I am really at a loss to explain it. Any further ideas anyone???

Re: Pls Help! GeneCafe suddenly doing weird roasts

Today I roasted Brazil Yellow Bourbon & Sumatra Mandheling Grade 1 from the last Bean Bay and the beans came out  horrendously uneven with substantially more than usual chaff still attached.

I decided to do one last batch before I called it a day and so roasted some Indian Monsoon Malabar and low and behold - Perfect! Beautiful perfectly even golden roast, no chaff - what gives??? Anyone? :-?

Re: Pls Help! GeneCafe suddenly doing weird roasts

                Hi kai viti

If your monsoon came out perfectly, and you used an identical configuration, then probable cause was temp too low coupled with too short a roast time.

It is hard to say what has happened as anyone trying to provide an answer would probably need a little more info. Your post is ambiguous - did you blend the beans prior to roasting or were they 2 separate roasts. Whats the ambient temp like where you are? What weight do you roast at a time? What temp do you use? How long do you roast for?
Anything else you can tell us?

Sorry for so many questions, but your answers are likely to shed some light!

                  Hey Dennis,

Yeah, sorry about that! I should be more specific. I roast in 200 to 250 gram batches weighed on highly accurate digital scales. Ambient temp. was aroung 22 C. Gene Cafe was preheated to around 50-60 C at start of first roast and subsequent roasts began at similar temps. Roast profile was 15mins @ 232C. A profile I always begin with and then tailor to individual beans by closely watching the roasts.

The beans are become REALLY uneven i.e. burnt / charcoal in patches while still underdone in others. They look like they need a bit longer but then half the roast would become ash!!!!

Re: Pls Help! GeneCafe suddenly doing weird roasts

kai viti, Ive never done a roast in the gene under 19 minutes. I suggest you try a batch at 230*/20 minutes, without pre-heating the gene. I would also suggest you use 250gm with that as the amount of beans in the gene does seem to affect temp/roasting times IMO.

Im not saying pre-heating isnt a good idea, but know that the temp and timing Ive offered here as a solution works from room temp.

Give it a go, and let us know the results - resist the urge to cut it short!

Before I begin roasting again I thought Id check out my Gene Cafes ability to reach 250 C from ambient temp. Ive read elsewhere that this should take on average between 5-7 minutes empty. My machine took 8 min 55 seconds, is this excessive? It does kind of sound excessive to me, should I be worried about it??? :-/

They vary quite a bit Kai, and the ambient temp will also have an affect - dont worry about it and go for it!

Looks a lot better Dennis thanks for the advice! Ive never had beens that have needed to be taken past 15 mins before so I guess I was a bit hesitant having charcoaled a few roasts in the past. They arent the epitome of an even roast, though arent far off it.

                            Cheers!

Good to hear Simon. These days with the gene I find I dont use a set and forget method, but set with what I think will be around the right temp and time, then alter temps and times depending on what I see (colour and smoke) and what I hear (1st, 2nd crack).

Ive also bought myself am el cheapo exhaust fan, made some mods so it would fit in a bucket and dump the beans in a colander that fits around the buckets rim to cool the beans down - it all happens within 2 minutes rather than a much longer cooling down process in the gene (its only significant downfall). Its a great way to stop further roasting that can sometimes occur if the beans are left to cool in the gene and only cost $25.00.

                                But ....

To get the beans out of the Gene to cool them down you have to turn off the Gene while still hot. That will turn of its fan which cools the electronics and other bits as well as the beans. Although after removing the beans you can turn it on again immediately, you are subjecting the Gene to conditions that may shorten its life.
