  • Roasting more than 400g in the Behmor 1600+

    I've started trialing 450g to 500g batches lately. This is mainly due to roasting 250g quantities for someone else and wanting to piggy back on each batch with some leftovers.

    500g might be a smidge too high, but I'm getting good results on 450g to 475g.

    I just press 400 and P1 and Start then Start again when down to 4:30, then when down to around 1 to 2 mins left I hit 'C' (bumps timer back up to just over 3 mins) then P5 (sets 'high' temp). After FC finishes I hit cool and open the door (I roast outside). At about 3 or 4 mins left I can stop and dump the beans and go again.

    I have only had trouble with one bean so far, that's when I hit 'P1' instead of 'P5' by mistake and didn't get a proper FC since naturally it cooled right down.

    I'm pretty sure this would not work at all in the 110 volt version, but here in Australia in Summer I have no trouble.

    Ah nice, thanks for sharing.

    You know what, looking through all my notes I've never done a roast with more than 350g. Although my roasts are already pushing 16-18 minutes so not sure if I should push the weight too high and get a longer roast than that, but might be worth a try

      On hot days i load 450 grams press 400 p1 start 18 min...@16 min. p4 m (manual) @11 p5 m @6 min D(16rpm) @FC D(8rpm) p4(75%) or p3(50%) watching the temps B and A @ end of RFC p1 when all FC is done press OFF remove beans press COOL ...and i cool the beans. If its cold (winter)i run one and a half minute preheat to get same finish times, around 2 to 1 min. remaining .

        I would have to have a look at my logs to see the biggest roast I have done, but have done several 625g (quarter of a bag) successfully. Still get a decent ROR on beam temp and duration seems fine.

        I preheated for a few minutes before loading the basket.

        I don’t think the roaster is designed to do such a big batch but have found it to be doable with some tweaks.

          Hi Cafelazio, I like many have never done a 450gm roast; just moved up to 400gms. So there is an attraction to the thought of 370/380gms gms of brown. The Behmor's shaking on it's bench even now. One query, you say you watch A and B temps, what are you looking for. Tia John

            Rightly or wrongly I regularly roast 555g without too many issues. I preheat for about 2 mins 200g/P2 with beans in and then start the cycle.

            The caveat is that I roast inside where the temperature is stable. When I was roasting outside I found the external temperature had a big impact so I got mixed results.

              Hello John i watch the A & B temp to plot the roast, to keep track, particularly towards the end, so that there is constant ROR, for instance when to press P1 @ first FC or rolling FC will depend on the momentum and when or if to hit it with more heat before removing the load. Watching A and B are good indicators if there is to much heat; i make sure that B temp reading is well away from err2 (shutdown temp). I have not experienced this with 50 or 60 roasts but i read it is 165 c.
              I might add that the roasts come out very very good. Excellent little roaster.

                I just moved up to doing 400g batches. Roughly followed this starting with 400/P1 and switching to manual on FC. Last night i did a batch with Peru CDJ. Was surprised I got into a rolling SC for the first time(!) as the beans were cooling inside the Behmor.
                Hoping it’ll taste good since I’ve not taken anything to that depth before. On the outsides he beans look to be quite evenly roasted.

                  Hi

                  I have switched to 500gr roasts a few weeks ago and it works fine. Setting is 400, P1. Immediately after start I switch to P5 and preheat the Behmor so that the B temp is over 100 degrees and then I put the basket into the running roaster. When A temp is over 190 degrees I switch to P4 until FC. With FC I switch to P2 and then watch the development. If I want to add some heat I go to P3 after a minute or two. I am using Roastmaster to log the roasts. I have attached three sample curves:

                        Well my first 400g roast went well using similar roast profiles to those above. I will try a 500g and if that goes ok, then push it a bit more.
