So I ended up buying a couple of kg of beans from this site. Botched up the first couple of roasts (the kaldi does about 250g of beans at a time). Subsequent roasts have been consistently good.

Thanks for the generous offer. I think the advice people have given re getting a larger bag and burning through it is good advice. So I'll buy a 'sacrificial' bag and see how I go.Originally posted by Barry O'Speedwagon View PostI can give you a few hundred grams of a few Central Americans, and a few others. I have way more than I need of few types of beans. I'm in the People's Republic of Lyneham. PM me if interested.

What sort of roaster do you have? If you don't have a roaster yet, consider buying a Behmor or Genecafe from CoffeeSnobs and get a 2.5kg bag of beans thrown in with the deal. Also. several site sponsors will sell greens beans in 1kg lots

Caffeine, Yelta's advice is good (as are the others). Pick a bean you like and have a few goes at it. Guarantee you will need half a 2.5kg bag, if not all, to be sure you could repeat a roast again. I would say my first twenty roasts were lucky dips. (probably the last twenty too!) Also consider Mr O'Speedwagons generous offer and Mal suggestion, but a bag goes in no time and allows you to gain some confidence by using the same bean and only changing one thing at a time. There is a couple of threads on known easy beans, pick one which sounds like you and go for it.

Why not buy 2 kg of green beans from BeanBay? I know it sounds like a lot, however once you start roasting you will go through them quite rapidly, they have a long shelf life so wont go stale in a hurry, plus there is the advantage of becoming accustomed to roasting the same bean each time you roast.Originally posted by caffeine View PostSo I am about to start the home roasting journey. I know there will be a lot of experimentation and a lot will come down to personal taste but as a first question - what is a good source of small quantities of green beans for experimenting - don't really want to buy larger quantities until I know what I want (and what I'm doing). I'm in the ACT if that makes any difference.
2kg of India Monsoon Malabar Gold will only cost you $22 plus post, easy to roast and very nice to drink, one of my favorites.

Maybe talk to the good people at CosmoreX Coffee and ask if you can buy some small quantities of green that they have on hand...
